It's scary to me that 114 college presidents would actively lobby to lower the drinking age to 18. These folks actually get a salary for such wisdom!

They claim it will drastically cut down on binge drinking.

Huh?!?!?

Three words for you: cranial rectal inversion.

Story here: http://www.wsfa.com/global/story.asp?s=8868815

Here's the website promoting the initiative (who has signed so far): http://www.amethystinitiative.org/signatories/

Some high-octane colleges there...Dartmouth, Duke, Syracuse, and others.

Hoo boy.

Totally absurd. I thought the Irish politician I heard promoting this was the only one idiotic enough to make this proposal.

Same reasoning, it would reduce binge drinking??????

Kinda flies in the face of logic.

Are these people really in charge of educational institutions?

Anyone old enough to serve in the military should be allowed to drink what he/she wants to drink.

I can normally at least appreciate your POV Ken, not on this one.

Apples and oranges.

How can lowering the drinking age stop bunge drinking?

Every military base I've ever been on allowed drinking for 18 +.

This was my point...not as much about lowering the age (though I'm against it); but the absolutely stupid rationale behind it that defies any common sense.

Which military bases currently allow under 21 to drink?

PS, how about if a man is a combat vet?

Beore we were married The Wife and went to college in New York when the drinking age was 18. We spent many a cold night nursing a pitcher of beer in a warm, quiet tav. Where do college people go these days? My daughter, now 30, complained about getting put out of Dennys when she and friends spent to much time over a cup of coffee. Starbucks???????

I am for lowering the age based on general principles, not on the basis that it would reduce binge drinking.

On that each of us have our opinion, right (me) or wrong (you) :). (I hope you know me by now Ken to not take umbrage :) )

Yet this this thread is about college presidents wanting the drinking age lowered to stop binge drinking. Utter foolishness, IMHO.

I don't know. Just relating my experience. We would even helicopter beer onto the ship, and nobody was carded. But like Roger said, this is an O/T tangent.

No one has an alternative to a nice quiet tavern on a cold winter's night? Some place that sells a pitcher of root beer for five bucks and lets you nurse it for 2 hours?

I worked on a college campus for 8 years. A large part of my job was to repair the dammage done by those "under the influence". Much of it was done by the younger residents while the campus security, local police, and college adminstration looked the other way. This was a "church sponsored college".

I don't believe changing the drinking age will make any differance there. It will, however, make alcohol readly available to teenage public that does not have the maturity to handle it.

While I was in the Coast Guard the EM club would serve anyone on active duty. The vast majority "problem dunks" were under 20.

Exactly. The ones who want to drink will do it anyway. Lowering the age will just give them the nod to do it without being charged with underage drinking.

methinks the college presidents are trying to reduce their legal liability. There have been several high-profile alcohol deaths in recent years. So...they invent a stupid rationale to push the agenda, and wash their hands of the lawsuits.

Just MHO

I don't think it should have ever been raised to 21 in the first place. Someone can vote to elect the person who raised the drinking age, but they can't drink alcohol...and they can still smoke. It really makes no sense.

If maturity is the basis on what the drinking age should be, it should be raised to 30.

Why not just lower it to 16, the legal age for obtaining a drivers license. Or to 15, the legal age to obtain a work permit. :BangHead:

Took the words out of my mouth. Whether you agree with the age limit as it stands or disagree, logic is logic and non-sequiturs are non-sequiturs. No offense to my buddy Ken. Now, where he and I would agree is the Federal mandate for having a national drinking age. Seems this is a states issue.
