College Presidents lobby for lowered drinking age :(

It's scary to me that 114 college presidents would actively lobby to lower the drinking age to 18. These folks actually get a salary for such wisdom!

They claim it will drastically cut down on binge drinking.

Beore we were married The Wife and went to college in New York when the drinking age was 18. We spent many a cold night nursing a pitcher of beer in a warm, quiet tav. Where do college people go these days? My daughter, now 30, complained about getting put out of Dennys when she and friends spent to much time over a cup of coffee. Starbucks???????

I worked on a college campus for 8 years. A large part of my job was to repair the dammage done by those "under the influence". Much of it was done by the younger residents while the campus security, local police, and college adminstration looked the other way. This was a "church sponsored college".

I don't believe changing the drinking age will make any differance there. It will, however, make alcohol readly available to teenage public that does not have the maturity to handle it.

While I was in the Coast Guard the EM club would serve anyone on active duty. The vast majority "problem dunks" were under 20.

Exactly. The ones who want to drink will do it anyway. Lowering the age will just give them the nod to do it without being charged with underage drinking.

methinks the college presidents are trying to reduce their legal liability. There have been several high-profile alcohol deaths in recent years. So...they invent a stupid rationale to push the agenda, and wash their hands of the lawsuits.

I don't think it should have ever been raised to 21 in the first place. Someone can vote to elect the person who raised the drinking age, but they can't drink alcohol...and they can still smoke. It really makes no sense.

If maturity is the basis on what the drinking age should be, it should be raised to 30.

Took the words out of my mouth. Whether you agree with the age limit as it stands or disagree, logic is logic and non-sequiturs are non-sequiturs. No offense to my buddy Ken. Now, where he and I would agree is the Federal mandate for having a national drinking age. Seems this is a states issue.
