Compassion International

My family sponsors a child through compassion. I don't have any experience with them beyond that. We've been very happy with the sponsorship however. The ability to interact directly with the child through letters and such has been a wonderful thing for our kids to experience.

Old Thread That I'm Bumping

Just bumping this old thread from last year.

I just updated some information on my account with Compassion International, as I've been sponsoring 2 children for several years. I feel alright about the ministry but wanted to see if any body else had some opinions pro or con. I just want to make sure I'm being a good steward. Thanks.

Edit: Sorry just read the rules for this section, I'm not a pastor, but I hope it was okay to post.

Any of you have any experiences with them?

I sponsored a child through them many years ago, but wouldn't do it now. It seems that they're heavily involved with the Emergent Movement and I can't find any evidence that they present the Gospel at all.

It's a good and noble thing to feed starving children but, in the words of Adrian Rogers, if all your doing is feeding them without giving them the Gospel, then all you've done is make this world a more comfortable place to go to Hell from.

Thanks. I put it in here to lose some of the debate that goes on. So you're welcome anytime!

I agree with what Dr. Rogers said. Don't know anything about how CI is connected with the emergent movement. I'll check it out.

I sponsor a child in Africa through Compassion International. Her name is Melat. I have sent her a letter introducing myself and introducing Jesus Christ. She has sent me two letters with prayer requests.

While I admired Dr. Adrian Rogers for his preaching and his work for the Lord (although I didn't always agree with him), I must give a rebuttal of his quote with a quote of my own.

"Anyone who can walk away from a starving child and refuse to feed them, clothe them, and provide medical attention for them because the organization providing the food, clothes, and medical isn't preaching the gospel as defined by them is a pretty sad example of a Christian indeed." - Scarlett O.

I chose Compassion Internation precisely because they do provide the gospel to these children.

Let me lay some facts on you.

Here is Compassion International's mission statement.

The Compassion Mission Statement
"Releasing children from poverty in Jesus Name"

In response to the Great Commission, Compassion International exists as an advocate for children, to release them from their spiritual, economic, social, and physical poverty and enable them to become responsible and fulfillied Christian adults.

Here is their statement of faith - what they believe and what they teach to the children and their families.
The Compassion Statement of Faith.

We believe
  • ...in the Holy Scriptures as originally given by God, divinely inspired, infallible, entirely trustworthy; and the supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.
  • ...One God, eternally existent in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  • ...Our Lord Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh, His virgin birth, His sinless human life, His divine miracles, His vicarious and atoning death, His bodily resurrection, His ascension, His mediatorial work, and His Personal return in power and glory.
  • ...The Salvation of lost and sinful man through the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ by faith apart from works, and regeneration by the Holy Spirit.
  • ...The Holy Spirit, by whose indwelling the believer is enabled to live a holy life, to witness and work for the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • ...The Unity of the Spirit of all true believers, the Church, the Body of Christ.
  • ...The Resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life, they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation.
If you want to know the truth about this organization and want to base your decision on facts, then go to their website. You can see how they work for yourself.

Actually, that's not a rebuttal. That's a strawman.

I chose Compassion Internation precisely because they do provide the gospel to these children.

Then they have changed greatly since the days I sponsored a child through them and whoever designed their website should be taken to task for leaving out any mention of the Gospel.

Let me lay some facts on you.

...says the girl who doesn't know the difference between a rebuttal and a strawman.

We also sponsor a child in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia by the same first name.

Outstanding organization. Fiscally responsible. Evangelical. Kids are saved--both spiritually, and physically--through this ministry.

A child that a former youth group of mine sponsored accepted Christ during the time I was there. We definitely celebrated that event!
