The consumer confidence numbers are out for August and the number is 84.8. This is a drop of 6.9 points from July. The August index of 84.8 is basically back to the number we had in April, which was 85.7.

July's number was 91.7 which was a drop of 6.6 points from June's number of 98.3.

This is headed in the wrong direction.

Here are the raw numbers for the past several months.

February....132.6
March.......118.8
April........85.7
May.........85.9
June........98.3
July........91.7
August.......84.8

The consumer confidence index is a leading indicator of consumer optimism on where the economy is headed.

Here is a graph of the numbers for the past several years, through July 2020.
