Seeing as there are recorded incidents I can understand it. I think in the UK we have so much imported, and I expect with very high regulations, that we don't really question stuff that way.

One of the good things about the US is the way people question authority. In the UK they tend to sound off but it rarely gets beyond words.

So how is it goods in the US have to reach such high standards but imports seem to have lower standards?

I had a cold with a terrible sore throat and a cough a while back. My Halls cough drops were made in China. I got rid of the cold, and I feel great, but this cough and sore throat are persistent. (I've had a tough time preaching for more than 20 minutes; some people are upset, others are ecstatic...) So, I've gone to a menthol candy that is milder, but keeps the coughing down, and it's made in the Philippines.

However, the Philippine candy is sold as a cough drop in the Philippines, and since it is not approved for that purpose here, they have to put a label over that part of the bag. They do have to meet US standards to import the stuff, though.

How do we know this? Is there some government documentation somewhere on the Internet that spells it all out?

In these third-world (politically correct known as "underdeveloped") countries,

Who inspects the factories/facilities where the food/other items we ingest is manufactured? Is there an FDA inspector on site in these third-world countries, or routinely doing inspections on site?

What standards are in place at the facilities to ensure sanitation, cleanliness, quality of ingredients to include contents free of pesticides, bacteria, lead, chemicals, and other things that are heavily regulated for consumer safety in the US?

As an American consumer, when I buy a product that is labeled under an American name that has been familiar to American households for decades, if not generations, such as Halls, Crest, Brachs, Brochs, etc., I am assuming, as do millions of other American consumers, that these products were A) Made in the USA and, B) have met all US FDA standards for quality control. It is a GREAT DECEPTION to read the fine print and find these products bearing American brand names are indeed imported from third-world countries. And since it is a deception, it not only puts Americans out of jobs, puts American consumers at risk, but it is EVIL to the core. GREED.

I used to work for Henkel, a German multinational Chemical Giant similar to P&G, in Europe. They sometimes delete one or two ingredients in the products produced in other countries than in Germany because such ingredients cost more than 25% of the total cost while they contribute to the fragrance and surface active agent, etc. I think Country of Origin is important information for the consumers to know for the quality assurance.
If the consumers buy them despite the country of origin, then it is OK. Otherwise, if the distributors hide the Country of Origin, then it is cheating, no doubt.

"So how is it goods in the US have to reach such high standards but imports seem to have lower standards?"

Goods are now re-exported or made by illegal
workers instead of Americans. At one time, we
had very high standards with respect to quality
in manufactered goods.

Sadly this has changed...

</font>
If its' not safe to swallow then it isn't even safe to put in your mouth. I don't know of anyone who knowingly swallows toothpaste. You know turpintine might be good to brush with too if you don't swallow but would you want it in your mouth? :rolleyes: :rolleyes: :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

</font>
The fact remains that, because of the flourise content, no toothpaste should be swallowed. This is a fact, regardless of the country the toothpaste was manufactured in.

Well, TP, since Mexico doesn't have the safest drinking water in the world or adequate waste treatment facilities, being that they are an underdeveloped country, and toothpaste contains a high content of water, whether you swallow it or not, do you really want to risk putting E.coli in your mouth? Or the mouths of your children?

Really, here's what the US State Department tells Americans who travel to Mexico:

http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/regional/regional_1174.html

And you don't care about putting stuff in your mouth that is made in Mexico? Well, let the buyer beware. It's your life.

That the State Dept. warns about Mexican drinking water and Congress has decided that Free Trade merits consumables by the billions of dollars made in Mexico under little to no regulation be shipped here for our families to ingest, just shows how schizophrenic our government bureaucracies really have become.

NASA had a toothpaste manufactured that could be swallowed safely due to the problems in rinsing out the mouth in weightless orbital condition.
