Cross Controversy: Push to restore symbol to county seal stirs debate

Two members of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors have introduced a proposal to add the image of a cross in the county's official seal -- a move likely to reignite a contentious debate that sparked a multi-year legal challenge nearly a decade ago.

Supervisors Michael Antonovich and Don Knabe filed a motion Tuesday to add a cross to the depiction of historic San Gabriel Mission on the emblem that appears on county property, The Los Angeles Times reported.

The seal once featured a tiny gold cross above an image of the Hollywood Bowl. The cross was justified as a historic reference to the area's settlement by Spanish missionaries in the 1700s.

Under threat of legal action by the ACLU Foundation of Southern California, supervisors in 2004 voted 3-2 to remove the cross. The mission was added that year, among other changes to the original 1950s-era seal.
My first reaction is: "Wow! Christians in LA! Who'da thunk?" My second reaction is, how arrogant of the ACLU and other Christ-deniers who would remove the cross from the seal, even though it was an historical reference relative to the San Gabriel mission. And now they're gonna raise a stink again, even though a cross above the mission would be perfectly appropriate.

I don't understand why it is so important to believers to have the cross associated with the world system.
In this case, the city and county of Los Angeles were first settled and founded by the brothers of the San Gabriel Mission. The city itself has a strong Christian heritage it is being forced to deny. These city council members want the residents of the city who -- and Who -- was first present in the basin they now call home. How is that difficult to understand?

That's not the issue and you know it. The issue is the injustice in its removal and the objections to its use.

Okay, what is that building in the right replacing the cross?
That's the Mission. The cross was (inexplicably) displayed above the Hollywood Bowl, which has now been moved above the space where it was, that the Mission now occupies. The county eliminated the oil wells from the seal that were in that space before.

So when and if believers get them to put a cross back on there, then what? I highly doubt God is concerned whether or not that seal has a cross on it. These are the types of threads that are made when it is thought that the world should behave like those who are born again.

I don't get it. It's on a seal that means nothing from a Christian perspective.

The seal isn't pointing anyone to Christ. We seem to like to have issues behind which to rally because it's easier for us to get excited about a good fight with those we can see as opposed to battling that which we cannot see.

It's a secular seal and it's the world doing what the world is supposed to do.

Move on to preaching the Gospel. If there were more people following Christ in that area, it would probably be a non-issue.
