Culture Clash: Dress Down vs Dress Up

Sunday best is a man made tradition. Modesty is the Biblical mandate.

So true and in my part of the woods, the best is always modesty. If the meaning of the word has not changed modest, wouldn't be the fad of the day or the style of the day or the hair style of the day and so on. But modest isn't just for church service but for everything else too, it is a way of life.

Besides, a person who had a flat tyre would advertise that fact.

Not necessarily. I have had such things happen with some being worse and do not advertise that to others. If someone wants to think bad of me because of the way I dress, I will do nothing to change their mind.

I can't. My heels I have don't match.

Hey, I found a verse tonight that will speak to you... There may not be a verse in the Bible that speaks about clothing.. but there is one that speaks about footwear.... (Besides God telling Moses to go barefoot!!! Which could be a real interesting thread!!!)

Anyway, here it is...

Habakkuk 3:19 NKJV
(19) The Lord God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer's feet, And He will make me walk on my high hills. To the Chief Musician. With my stringed instruments.

But I have yet to find the right color for my pumps....

You wear high heels? I am aghast...You do realize that wearing high heels accentuates your backside by elevating it...........oops! Did I say that?

Cheers,

Jim

"Is wearing jeans and tennis shoes to church okay?"

Of course it is. Its just about all I ever wear to church.

Generally, when I attend normal church services I wear what ever I plan on wearing the rest of the day. I see absolutely no reason not to.

God is interested in our heart, not our clothes.

PreacinJesus...

"There church where I get serve has no dress code and the vast majority of people dress way down when they attend. It isn't unusual to see flip flops, jeans, shorts, tshirts, and a great assortment of regular clothes. Just come as you are."

Just as it should be.

I won't go through and quote all the posts I agree with, so let me say I agree with rbell (as well as being cracked up!) and Webdog.

If one wanted to give God his/her best, why just give it at church? Wouldn't you want to dress your best all the time? Of course, the Lord sees us naked, so I don't suppose it matters.

I worship with my whole heart, regardless of where I am or what I'm wearing.

Whoever said that about the tie, my dh would completely agree!!!

One thing that always intrigued me: it's generally accepted for us to "dress down" on Sunday night. In other words, the bar is raised for Sun. AM, but not so much for PM.

Just an interesting side note. As I've said...our church is all over the map with regard to attire.

My church ditto's rbells

Its just that I find it quiet ironic---that a clubhouse can require a golfer to wear dress slacks and a collared shirt and proper shoes to play its course---and we thing that fine---no problem there----but the minute the church even "suggests" a dress code we get all bent out of shape

Even the demonic man of the Gadarenes after he met the Lord Jesus Christ was "dressed and in his right mind"----which I find lacking in quiet a few places in these good ole United States

Cultural requirements vary. If I wanted to host a black tie party at my home, that is my perogative. Fact is, there are no dress requirements given in the Bible, in fact, those who wore the finest clothes were often rebuked. Would I rather dress like the Pharissee's or Jesus?

The demon possessed man went from being naked to dressed...not dressed up.

I grew up in a church just like that..."Sunday best" for the morning...whatever in the afternoon. Purely man's tradition, and quite hypocritical if you ask me.

To be fair, I think the issue there was clothed versus "nekkid," not dressed down vs. dressed up.

Oh, and one other thing: I tell my youth all the time that I have a double standard.

For instance...we had a kid come to our church a couple of years back, wearing a shirt that contained a profanity (the phrase "raising ____"). I found out that this was the guy's first time in church that he could ever remember. He received lots of grace. We didn't mention the shirt that week. Since then, he has accepted Christ and joined our church. If he were to wear it now, I'd go to him and not think twice about it.

My double standard: I expect more from our folk than those who are visiting, lost, and don't know what all this stuff means.

(of course, this issue was not exactly "dress up" vs. "dress down," but the point is still there)

And I'm quite proud of our church for not making an issue out of attire styles (not talking modesty here...just formal vs. not). As I've said...I'll have jeans, suits, and in between on one row...and they don't mind it. That's nice.

He has since accepted Christ

That only applies at the "high falutin" fancy dancy golf clubs. Those places are filled with lots of golf "pharisees" who enjoy they fact that they are rich enough to not have to golf with the "unwashed".

At the public courses anyone can play, and they can dress how ever they want to dress.

Jesus had "issues" with the pharisees....but He loved the humble "regular folk". :wavey:

The public course that we've been part of DOES require collared shirts and no denim

I reason in my mind-------"If they can tell me to wear a collared shirt---at least they can give me 18 "greens" that actually HAVE green grass growing on them in stead of bear dirt and "nekked" spots-----one cannot "Putt" on greens that do not have green grass!!!:saint: :saint:

Changing name of churches to Baptist Rescue Mission to protect those who want to wear rags to church. Wouldn't want anyone to think that dressing decently was an insult to anyone.

Cheers,

Jim
