Defense for polygamists cites gay marriage

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Canada's decision to legalize gay marriage has paved the way for polygamy to be legal as well, a defense lawyer said Wednesday as the two leaders of rival polygamous communities made their first court appearance.

The case is the first to test Canada's polygamy laws.

Winston Blackmore, 52, and James Oler, 44, are each accused of being married to more than one woman at a time. The charges carry a maximum penalty of five years in prison, British Columbia Attorney General Wally Oppal said.

But Blackmore's lawyer, Blair Suffredine, said during a telephone interview that marriage standards in Canada have changed.

"If (homosexuals) can marry, what is the reason that public policy says one person can't marry more than one person?" said Suffredine, a former provincial lawmaker. Canada's Parliament extended full marriage rights to same-sex couples in 2005.

Yep, and it will also pave the way for people marrying sheep, couples marrying couples, and any other sinful condition that mankind can conjure up.

Why make one immoral act legal and not another? Isn't that discrimination? :BangHead: This world is just paving the way for Christ's return. In Luke 18:7,8 it says, "And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? (His patience with the wicked is astounding) I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?"

At the rate this world is going, we will soon reach the days the Bible speaks of where evil is called good, and good is called evil (Maybe someone knows where that verse is; I couldn't find it.). Oh yes, that's right, we're already there. The evil imaginations of mankind knows no limit. That is one way that mankind is unlimited: in their evil imaginings and their willingness to try anything just for their own selfish pleasure. "Even so, come, Lord Jesus."

Isaiah 5:20 "Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!"

To be fair, polygamy has an abundance of historical (and even biblical)precedent. Gay marriage has no such precedent.

I oppose both, but it's a fair argument from polygamists.

Yep, I agree.

Also if one wants small government, we should want them out of our personal matters like marriage. It isn't the government's business.

Many gay leaders are quick to dismiss analogies between polygamy and homosexuality. “Polygamy is a choice; sexual orientation isn’t,” says writer Andrew Sullivan, an eloquent supporter of same-sex marriage. “Polygamy is also terrible for society. It abuses women, creates a class of unmarried males [by leaving a shortage of single females] and leaves children unclear about their parents.”

N o one seems to be quoting the other charge; marrying an underaged child. One of the leaders is also facing this law.

This situation is also under Canadian Law and not USA Law.

Cheers,

Jim
