Most of us will agree that there is a huge difference between a substandard degree and a degree-mill diploma.

As Bill stated -- today there are way too many opportunities for folks to settle for a substandard degree IMHO. There are tons of good distance options that can be found with a little bit of digging.

Perhaps if the world hadn't put such a value on degrees, people wouldn't be tempted to obtain a "degree", however questionable.

When I started out in 1945, a degree was not an issue to becoming a missionary or pastor. A Bible College diploma was sufficient training to be taken seriously. Men and women went on to serve the Lord. Eventually came the degrees, and the advent of non-academic DD's, often dubbed as Dumb Dogs.

I am obviously not opposed to higher learning, but let's get real, and learn where higher learning serves a purpose in the field of education, and when a "calling" to ministry includes those who are gifted in preaching, teaching, counselling, pastoring the people who fill the pews, and the mission fields.

The best educated people do not have to display their degrees, they prove them in the essence of what they say and do.

    Cheers,

    Jim

    Good observation

I agree with you and I am an educator. Degrees are not an end of themselves. Degrees, supposedly, represent a level of academic attainment but not all do. Have you noticed many job advertisements call for a degree plus experience. The real work-a-day world quickly weeds out those with just a degree and little knowledge. I am more interested in what a man can do than the degrees he holds.

    Fairly and well balanced observation

Well said, Bill. I wish more people on all sides of the issue had your perspective. Your post, I think, infers that education and learning should be more important than the degree for the degree's sake alone.
