I don't have a problem avoiding caffine - but in terms of the hospital costs in healthcare and family problems, loss of life etc you don't see very much of that attributed to "too much caffine" so while I don't use drinks that have that ingredient I don't see it as being as much a health hazard as nicotine (7 drops at once will kill a horse and there are 7 drops in each pack) or alcohol.

    In Christ,

    Bob

Unless you want your brain to be stupified, you ought to stay away from alcoholic beverages altogether.

God prohibited the use of wine to the priests ministering in His sanctuary for it has a benumbing influence upon the brain.

After the destruction of Nadab and Abihu, the Lord spoke to Aaron, saying: "Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations: and that ye may put difference between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean; and that ye may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the Lord hath spoken unto them by the hand of Moses." The priests and judges of Israel were to be men of strict temperance, so that their minds would be clear to discriminate between right and wrong.

Then there was John the Baptist:
"Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost. . .

The angel of God appeared to the wife of Manoah, and told her that she would have a son; these important instructions were given her: "Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing all that I commanded her let her observe.."
God had important work for the child of Manoah to do, in order to have the qualifications necessary for this work, that the habits of the child were to be so carefully regulated. "

"It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink: lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted."

And sorry but I can see no logical reason why ANY CHRISTIAN would want to benumb their brain and make it hard to discriminate between right and wrong and to pervert their judgment, either.

    Tam,

    When Jesus made the statement,

Matthew 11-19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.,

He was not admitting to drinking fermented wine. Take the verse in context. Read the verse before.

Matthew 11:18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.

Jesus was addressing their false accusations in both verses. Jesus was not a winebibber.

When I drink a glass of wine on a rather empty stomach I directly notice it in my head. :(

I understand why christians are against alcohol even though I think that a beer is okay, it simply depends on how much you drink. When you drink 1 or 2 beers to get relaxed it's not bad, I think. I mean when you're at home and drink a beer to be able to sleep better then where's the huge problem?

But what about caffeine? What's bad about caffeine? I think some people are really overdoing it. Why do you not also avoid fat and sweets? What about chocolate and ice cream? There are sooo many christians which would completely freak out of they had an alcoholic in their church but what about christians which are totally overweight? What about them? They are much more accepted but I don't think God makes any difference between alcoholism and gluttony...

Xdisciplex, You live in a country where drinking beer is a national pastime and quite acceptable. I remember some Baptists sitting about, having a pint and thinking nothing of it.

In North America, we see the excesses and the resultant abuse. I think this is where fundamentalists are drawing the line and frowning upon all alcohol.

You are quite right about the abuse of foods and resultant obesity.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Amen xdisciplex! I also don't see anything wrong with drinking a beer or having a glass of wine its only when some over eat or drink too much that it becomes wrong. It is awesome what you said and you are right. [IMG]
I don't think God makes any difference between alcoholism and gluttony...

Sin is sin... but it don't become sin until it is abused or overindulged in. We have to eat but sometimes we lose the balance of when we had enough. Just the same with drinking. Theres a self control issue with all we do thats why in the bible it says we need to die to the flesh.

In the bible Timothy was told, "Drink a little wine for your stomach sake", but then we should stop at a little and let the wine do its work. Just like we take an asprin for a headache, but if we continue to take them or we take too many then that would not be a good thing. For one if we continue to take asprin for every little bump or ache we end up having to take more till we either have to go to a stronger brand of pain reliever or we could overdose.

    Yes exactly.
I think that a lot of christians are not objective. When it comes to alcohol the directly scream but when it comes to other things they don't seem to have a problem with it at all. I am not a fan of alcohol, I also don't tolerate it very well and walking around with this strange feeling in your head is also not very funny especially when you have to do something productive. I also notice that the attitude which christians have towards alcohol is not always the same. Some are strict others are not that strict and also have alcohol at home. When we have something at home then sometimes I also drink a beer or some wine but I don't think I would store alcohol at home. There are people which have a whole minibar at home, somehow I think this is decadent.
I bet if you ask a french christian wether drinking vine is okay he'll look at you with huge eyes and not even know what you want from him, lol. Like Jim said it depends on the country and the culture.

    The "what" is contained here:

"All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
Let no man seek his own, but every man another’s wealth.
Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:
For the earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof.
If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.
But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the
earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof:
Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man’s conscience?
For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?
Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
Give none offense, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:" 1 Cor. 10:23-32

Yes, Standing firm in Christ, let us by all means look at the scripture again.

First of all, I am not advocating drinking. My purpose is to answer the OP. The question was: Did Jesus drink alcoholic beverages? My answer was yes, because of the following scripture.

18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.
19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.

It seems plain to me that it says: John came not eating or drinking (another place the bible says he ate locusts and wild honey). But he wasn't eating with others like Jesus was. All they could find to blame on John was that he must have a devil. (which of course he didn't).

But then Jesus came and He was eating and drinking, so they said He a glutton and a winebibber, because He was drinking.

The thing is that just because someone has one drink here and there it doesn't make them an alcoholic!!

I don't do it myself (anymore) but I don't throw rocks at those who do.

    Selah,

    Tam

I dont know if anybody realizes this or not but the first step in becoming an alcoholic is to drink that first drink. I dont think hardly anybody EXPECTS that they will become an alcoholic. It just kind of creeps up on you.

Also how can we really be a witness to the unbelievers around us if we are drinking booze? Shouldnt we "come out from them, and be ye separate" 2Corinthians 6:17

How can we convict the world of the need of Christ if we are not any different than they are?

"touch not the unclean thing and I will receive you" 2Cor 6:17

    @ gekko

I think there is a difference. Ask a French christian wether drinking vine is okay and ask an American christian and you get 2 different answers.
Stealing, lying, idolatry and the other things are clearly sinful.
But drinking alcohol is up to the person to decide.

This is like saying eating one candy bar will make you become addicted to chocolate.
For somebody to become an alcohol addict it takes more than just the alcohol. Such people also have problems which they are trying to cope with.

Realizing that there is a devil out there

Here is another point to think about...
We are told to be "sober" because you know what? the devil is constantly seeking to overcome us with doubt, distrust of God, discouragement, unbelief, sin...

why put yourself at a disadvantage so that you open the door and allow him to get that entrance by drinking alcohol

The devil can steal away your hope.. steal away everything... because you left your mind unguarded.

    "BE SOBER"
The Bible says " Be sober, be vigilant ; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour" 1Pt:5:8

Jesus said to "watch ye and pray" because the flesh is weak... why weaken it more?

    "WATCH YE AND PRAY"
Mt:26:41: Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

AHA!!!!! There we have it now!

xdisciplex said people have problems they are trying to cope with so they turn to things like chocolate and booze.

Now WHO OR WHAT should we be turning to instead???

    Answer_____________ ??????

and let me tell you something, its that very thing that leads you to addiction... turning to alcohol because of your problems!!!

I know because I used to do that myself.

would you tell someone to just smoke a couple of cigarettes?

    I would HOPE NOT!!!

well why then would you educate someone to just drink "a little bit in moderation"???

    ...think about it

You do have good points, Claudia. [IMG]
I'm also not a fan of alcohol but I also don't really know if God totally forbids it. I know a few christians which do not mind drinking 1 or 2 beers. Either I am too strict or they too easy.
But there are also christians which say as a christian you must not go to the cinema or you must not listen to this kind of music.

I would not tell anyone to drink something, why should I? But I also don't know if trying to forbid other christians to drink something is good. If you don't want to drink, fine. But what do you wanna do? Scare other christians which have a different attitude? Drinking a beer every evening doesn't turn you into an alcoholic for some people this is simply a habit. They always have a beer in the evening when they eat something. I wouldn't do this, but others do it. So what shall I do? Go to them and preach to them?
I think this is an individual decision.

You should learn to HATE IT because alcohol is not your friend at all. It pretends to be but then......

    Proverbs 23:
29: Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
30: They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.
31: Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.
32: At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
33: Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.
34: Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
35: They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
