    For awhile the Lord has been convicting me that I (and believers in general) do not really see the people around me. We go through life without seeing the hurting and needy people around us that need the love of Jesus.

    As a result of this, I am preaching a message this coming Sunday on Matthew 9:36-38 entitled "Do you see the crowds?" In my conclusion I am playing the following song by Casting Crowns as I think it hits the nail on the head.

    Does Anybody Hear Her?

    She is running
    A hundred miles an hour in the wrong direction
    She is trying
    But the canyon’s ever widening
    In the depths of her cold heart
    So she sets out on another misadventure just to find
    She’s another two years older
    And she’s three more steps behind

    Does anybody hear her? Can anybody see?
    Or does anybody even knows she’s going down today
    Under the shadow of our steeple
    With all the lost and lonely people
    Searching for the hope that’s tucked away in you and me
    Does anybody hear her? Can anybody see?

    She is yearning
    For shelter and affection
    That she never found at home
    She is searching
    For a hero to ride in
    To ride in and save the day
    And in walks her prince charming
    And he knows just what to say
    Momentary lapse of reason
    And she gives herself away

    If judgement looms under every steeple
    If lofty glances from lofty people
    Can’t see past her scarlet letter
    And we never even met her.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    What about you? Do you see the crowds?
    I really try to see the crowds. I know I miss some tho. I found myself last week shying away from a girl who fits the description of the song. She is known for keeping headlice. A friend of mine has offered to pay for her to take piano lessons from me (which I wont accept the $) and he even bought her a used keyboard to practice on. Apparently he sees the crowds. Its not so much that she keeps headlice as it is that i want to protect my children from that, and she will be in my home on a weekly basis. But i decided that I am ashamed of myself, and this post reinforces that. Thanks for sharing it.
    Rachel [IMG] I have listened to it tonight on my computer as well. I was sitting here putting the finishing touches on my conclusion to my sermon and suddenly this song came to mind. I listened to it and I thought that is it. That is the conclusion to my message. And I think it will work really well.
    There are so many, just like the girl Tater mentioned, that are right in the shadow of our steeple that we do not see many times.
    Pastor, you are scaring me!!! Not really, but it is just that I had prepared a sermon today basically the same thing... only a different Casting Crowns song!!!
    here it is:
    Love them like Jesus
    (Mar 6:30) And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught.
    (Mar 6:31) And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.
    (Mar 6:32) And they departed into a desert place by ship privately.
    (Mar 6:33) And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him.
    (Mar 6:34) And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.
    Compassion
    COMPASSION, n.
    1. A suffering with another; painful sympathy; a sensation of sorrow excited by the distress or misfortunes of another; pity; commiseration. Compassion is a mixed passion, compounded of love and sorrow; at least some portion of love generally attends the pain or regret, or is excited by it. Extreme distress of an enemy even changes enmity into at least temporary affection.
    I. And Jesus, when he came out
    A. As Jesus was going --We are going
    We are constantly on the go
    B. Jesus was a busy man, the disciples were busy people---WE are busy also
    Busy with Jobs
    Busy with families
    Busy with church
    C. Jesus was going to much needed rest
    Even our rest can be disturbed by people that need us
    God will give supernatural rest when we act out of love
    II. saw much people
    A. Are you aware of the people around you Men, women, children, teens, co-workers, etc
    B. Who are you associated with?
    Just Christians
    Just Sinners
    Mixture
    C. He didn't just see their outward appearance - Saw their soul
    We need to look past peoples outward appearance and reputation
    III. and was moved with compassion toward them,
    A. Compassion-- That gut feeling where you hurt for what the other person is going through.
    you associate with their pain, you identify with them
    This is seen from God through out the whole Bible
    1. When God brought the Isrealites out of Eygypt.
    2. When he called them "his chosen" He identified with them
    3. It was compassion that drove Him to promise in the Garden of Eden that a savior would come.
    4. It was compassion that allowed Him to Choose Noah
    5. And it was ultimately compassion that kept Him on the cross.
    But just as faith without works is dead, so is feeling sorry for someone, without trying to help them is worthless.
    B. "Moved" "toward" --- Both action words
    Love is not love without action
    Luk 10:30-37 And Jesus answering said, A certain [man] went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded [him], and departed, leaving [him] half dead. (31) And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. (32) And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked [on him], and passed by on the other side. (33) But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion [on him], (34) And went to [him], and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. (35) And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave [them] to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. (36) Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? (37) And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.
    IV. Now what does that mean for us today?
    We need to have compassion on the people around us.
    A. Those we are in contact daily
    B. Those who God places in our path
    V. How do we show compassion?
    Love them like Jesus
    A. Give to them to meet their needs
    B. Listen to them
    C. Be willing to take time for them
    D. Finally when you can't answer their questions, point them to Jesus who loves them
    (Mar 12:37)
    David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he [then] his son? And the common people heard him gladly
    Why did they listen to Jesus? He showed them compassion.
    Do you want your lost friends and loved ones to hear you? Show them compassion.
    I then sing "Love them Like Jesus"
    Pastor check out one of the verses you are using,
    Mat 9:36 But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.
    And one that I am using:
    (Mar 6:34) And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.
    Do you think God is in this or what.
    Let me know how your sermon turns out, and I will you.
    Tater, this may be an answer to my prayer!
    It sure might be, Tim. I do know that God uses other people to confirm things He tries to tell us. Its neat to see that happen. [IMG]
