    Ineffective.

They have no way to verify the validity of SS#.

If it cannot be verified the employee is dismissed until THEY can provide proof. Bigger gov't is not the answer, nor are they effective at anything. Lets create a seperate gov't program to combat all fraud:rolleyes:

    NO! A thousand times NO!
Government should NEVER be in the business of picking winners and losers in enterprise by legal requirement! That is neither constitutional nor just.

No. How about we get rid of the entitlement programs that encourage illegal immigrants to come here and work for 18 months and get bona fide benefits that are worth far more than the output they have already contributed.

    No national ID.
    No e-verify requirement.
No entitlement programs that provoke these moral hazzards.

Maybe then we would make immigration legally easier and be able to welcome them here to work and live because they would actually be contributing to the economy instead of taking from it.

Why can't we have LESS government and LESS monitoring information about us for a change?

    Somewhat over the top.

The information is already there. Employers simply need to be allowed to tap into it.

Employers can tap into it, voluntarily. The question was, "Should it be mandatory that employers screen prospective employees through e-verify?"

Yep. Similarily, let's create a "Department of Spending Waste" whose job will be to ferret out useless and wasteful programs and give them the axe!

Yep! and a blind pig finds an acorn now and then.

But his administration has opposed Arizona and Alabama immigration bills. Doesn't leave many options if we're serious about enforcement.

The last time I purchased a firearm the electronic background check took less than five minutes. It was no hassle for the dealer or me.

Help me to understand--did the convenience of the government regulation make it palatable?

Would it make it more palatable to you if the dealer photocopied a buyer's ID, filled out the proper paperwork, mailed it off and waited two weeks for a reply?

Maybe background check isn't the best example. I know it is a sore spot with many people. Maybe a better one is checking to see if voters are really eligible or not. Either we want to enforce voter laws or we don't.

So where's the "new" government agency people are so up in arms about?

It's right next door to the Strawman Supply Company. Didn't you see it when you picked up your latest one?

It's already mandatory in 17 states. Texas should get on board.

So more regulations and bureaucratic rule to slow down American businesses. Get government out of the way!

    Hmmm.

Wonder how many illegal aliens are employed in Texas?

33% of the work force in Texas are illegals.

For once, the government is actually offering a solution to a problem. Maybe you're right, employers can solve the problem...but they haven't...and they won't. Therefore it follows that we shouldn't even try. Especially since the government is offering the remedy.
