Conservative Christian leader James Dobson has softened his stance against Republican presidential hopeful John McCain, saying he could reverse his position and endorse the Arizona senator despite serious misgivings.

"I never thought I would hear myself saying this," Dobson said in a radio broadcast to air today. ". . . While I am not endorsing Senator John McCain, the possibility is there that I might."

Earlier, Dobson had said he could not in good conscience vote for McCain, citing the candidate's support for embryonic stem-cell research and opposition to a federal constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, as well as concerns about McCain's temper and foul language.

Of his new position, Dobson said in the statement to the AP, "If that is a flip-flop, then so be it."

I am not surprised nor shocked, and really expected him to come out with this before now. Conseverative Christian leaders have no back bone.:tear:

Just a few months ago he was speaking strongly about not endorsing McCain. This just makes him look easily swayed.

    Who cares who Dobson endorses?

    I certainly don't.

I lost my respect for Dobson after his shameless attacks on TNIV translation and its translators. He had Wayne Gruden (an ESV'er) on multiple times, but never allowed anyone from the TNIV-side to speak on his program. He sets himself up as some kind of Grand Pooh-Bah.He makes his pronouncements and thinks he speaks for most conservative Christians -- he does not.

I have a real problem with myself and it is this:

Every now and then......too often times its is recent and too frequent .........I get disappointed with my Christian brothers and sisters..... on stands which they take when they differ so much in agreement from me: Sometimes these issues are in minor things of priority; not world changing; not doctrinally significant regarding the foundation of the Word, the virgin birth, diety, willing sacrifice and the bodily resurrection and only way of salvation by and through the Lord Jesus Christ; the existance of Heaven and Hell; salvation by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

This is a real problem, because my Lord teaches me...when I listen and if I will listen..... that I am faulty in my thinking.. at least some of the time (and my pride doesn't want me to acknowledge this): While it is good and often necessary for me to take a strong stand when I feel a certainty...... still, if I regard my love for the brethren based upon their agreement with me over issues of less importance, then I may be withholding my support and blessing in the body of Christ for the ministry and the function for which they are called in the body of Christ.

With Dobson, I have some issues regarding modern psychology and psychiatry......however, I have to temper some of that with the fact that very often it is hard, especially for a new Christian and even for a well studied Christian, in times of distress and difficulty, to access the spiritual helps which God has provided in the comfort of His Holy Spirit and the application of the Word, without the prayerful assistance and agreement of a human counselor to encourage and remind us of principals of faith and help to mirror the errors in our thinking which lead us to dead ends or cliffs of despair. Not all Christian companions are acceptable counselors or trustworthy with secrets, and not all understand the spiritual battle and the necessity for companionship in suffering and agreement in prayer, and encouragement by the Word of God and the fellowship of agreement. Biblical agreement implies acceptance of another's representation without debating whether or not it is true for that person..... not agreement with sin or excuses, but an empathy of understanding of the human weakness and dependance on God for forgiveness, healing and restoration, and an extension of God's grace to each other.

I have to remind myself of the admonition, "For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother." (Mk 3:35) and Luke 9:49, 50 "And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbade him, because he followeth not with us. And Jesus said unto him, "Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us." " and finally and an appropriate reminder the more so as the end of times approaches in John 13: 34,35 "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another."

I thank God for people like Dr. Dobson, whom God has raised up to positions of recognition and respect, who, while not perfect.....as man might judge, do express a firm belief and testimony in agreement with the most essentials of Scripture, and also support sexual purity and morality, the sanctity of God created life, and the wholeness of the home and the preservation of family. I can appreciate that through the progression of his ministry, Dr. Dobson is able to express a reservation, which we who hear him should recognize, even when he feels compeled to support persons which he thinks are marginally agreed with his values.... against a choice which is more obviously and aggressively opposed to his values.

I don't know about the ballot in Colorado where he votes, but I understand there is a strong and aggressive homosexual agenda moving in the politics and restrictions on free speech within that state: I also know that in Florida, I will have more choices in the national vote on my state ballot besides the two parties of the Republicats or the Demopublicans, so I intend on voting my values.

I figure, even if Chuck Baldwin doesn't win, my vote will count as a voice and testimony for my moral and spiritual position and for the values I would prefer to see reflected in our laws than either of the other candidates understand or accept. Perhaps it may also serve to encourage others who would enter politics on a more local or state level to see their hopes and values reflected by the support of those who vote with me.

................or is it that they have decided that they like being part of the "establishment," and will do what it takes to remain a part of it?
