OK so what do with the people who have fallen on hard times? Not the bums & drunks & drug addicts!

Generally, these aren't the folks that are sleeping on a park bench, begging for money in a WalMart parking lot. Generally, when folks can demonstrate that they really are trying there are many people and organizations that are ready and willing to help.

Maybe its like my farmer's story about moving the firewood in exchange for a meal.

We feed the one who will move the wood.

Cheers,

Jim

That's just it. Is it fair to sacrifice the ones who are willing to help themselves in order to coddle the ones who won't? And, for that matter, how is it loving to help those who won't help themselves, when all that does is drive them deeper into poverty and foster a sense of dependency?

Just giving handouts DOES NOT help people. Asking for something in return does not drive a person deeper into poverty. Refusing to work, even something simple, for food/shelter is a choice a person makes.
This country (USA) we have lowered ourselves to the mentality of give me, "give me, give me." When I ran for State Assembly, a college student asked me what I would do to increase financial aid for those attending higher education. I told him that paying for school is his responsibility. Now, if he wanted to join the Army, he could finish school on the GI Bill, but that would no longer be a handout - since he would have earned it!
Its time to remember what JFK told not only Americans, but the entire world!
(the famous quote starts at 3:58) - but listen to the entire clip - to put all into context
