Military.com has learned that the Department of Defense, for the first time in almost 10 years, has dramatically reduced its number of recognized religious faiths and belief systems by approximately 180.

The reforms mark the first time the list has been officially revised since a memo was issued March 27, 2017, decreasing the total number of faiths from 211 to its new number of 31. The changes were iterated in a May 20, 2026, memorandum issued by the Under Secretary of War and signed by Anthony Tata, under secretary of defense for personnel and readiness of the United States, and obtained by Military.com.

This latest revision to the faith codes comes at the direction of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, according to the Tata-signed memo, done to “streamline the DoW collection of religious preferences collection for service members to enhance the delivery of targeted religious support from the Chaplaincy.” It calls for the previously instituted faith and belief codes to be revised within a 60-day period from the issuance of the memorandum.

Here are the faiths that no longer appear to be specifically recognized under the new policy, according to an Independent analysis.

  1. Messianic
  2. Eckankar
  3. Heathen
  4. Native American
  5. Church of the Spiral Tree
  6. Troth
  7. Rosicrucianism
  8. Dian Wi (Dianic Wicca)
  9. Sacred Well Congregation
  10. Druid
  11. Deism
  12. Gard Wi (Gardnerian Wicca)
  13. Shaman
  14. Seax Wi (Seax Wicca)
  15. Asatru
  16. Pagan
  17. Humanist
  18. Eastern Religions, Other
  19. Unitarian Universalist
  20. Wicca
  21. Magick And Spiritualist
  22. Atheist

Leaders of removed faith and worldview communities, as well as legal advocates, have expressed alarm and outrage, arguing the consolidation strips official recognition and could jeopardize ecclesiastical endorsement of chaplains who serve those traditions; the Military Religious Freedom Foundation called the move unconstitutional and signaled potential legal action, and other groups want the full memo published for clarity . Pagan and Wiccan outlets, along with civil‑liberties and humanist organizations, have publicly demanded transparency about criteria for removal and what accommodations will remain available.

It strips official recognition and could jeopardize ecclesiastical endorsement of chaplains who serve those traditions.

No, these mostly occult faiths are deleted now, they are not put into another category.
So have all of these people been left blank in their “spiritual” category?
I don’t know one way or the another but I think they still were categorized.

We are talking about forms.
It may affect some policies but firstly it is a matter of registration.

It involves mainly the assignment of chaplains. Troops can still put any faith on their dog tags. There apparently will no longer be Wiccan, Rosicrucian, or Eckankar chaplains.

I am certain that much of this is false, manufactured outrage from the radical left who express would express equal outrage for Donald Trump if he were to say "Good morning" to you!

What does this mean? That a serviceman is no longer authorized to follow these "religions" and has to pick another one from the list? I think not, but how many differing flavors of "Wiccan" is there and do they have to make accommodation for each and every one or can their beliefs fall under a general category where one could take care over whether you worship Hickory, Mahogony, Oak, or Maple trees? And I apologize in advance if I have offended any Wiccans who may happen to be here!;)

How many different flavors of "Baptist" are there? Southern Baptist, American Baptist, Reformed Baptist, General Baptist, Primitive Baptist, BBFI, GARBC, SWBC, IFB unaffiliated? Baptists hardly get along with each other even within their own camps! You really think an Independent Baptist would take spiritual counsel from some liberal, apostate Southern Baptist?

What was I saying here, I'm forgetting now...

I do not care about leftist outrage or offended Wiccans.

The chaplains ministry will now be according to a more limited list of faiths.

This does not mean individual service people cannot continue to follow weird occult faiths like Wicca, Druidism, Eckankar, or Rosicrucianism.

I am sure a Baptist chaplain can effectively minister to any type of Baptist service person. The various varieties of Baptist matters mainly to quarrelsome people who enjoy strife.
