Ford Had a Better Idea: No Bailout

Ford Motor Company took everyone by “surprise” Nov. 2, when it announced nearly a billion dollars in profit for the third quarter of 2009. The company also said it would be “solidly profitable” by 2011.



CNN repeated the announcement on Nov. 3 “American Morning,” saying, “Turning now to the Big Three in Detroit, Chrysler extends its buyout offer to more than 20,000 employees while General Motors is still trying to restructure spending billions of bailout dollars, but Ford – which didn’t take any cash from Uncle Sam – is back in the green again, posting a profit of nearly $1 billion for the third quarter.”



The announcement was big news, but what should have caught more journalists’ attention was the fact that Ford managed to turn things around without the help of a federal bailout – the very bailout reporters promoted in 2008 and 2009.



Yet, several shows including all three networks’ morning programs, CBS “Evening News,” CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360,” and MSNBC News Live all left out that crucial piece of information Nov. 2.



But that Nov. 2 report, the “Evening News” found room to include union complaints against Ford, quoting UAW’s Gary Walkowicz: “I think people are angry and fed up with concessions. We’ve dealt with concessions year after year for the last five years. I people – think people got to the point of saying, ‘Enough is enough that’s it.’”

But the greed of the union boys is unhappy with their company making profits and going for the black: They are conspiring to put their company and their jobs in jeapardy.

It is sad how one company is maligned for doing things right and the others are praised for taking the government handout.

I have been a loyal Ford customer since I started driving and I would hate for some greedy union idiots to ruin it.

My hubby was just in a car accident a few weeks back, forcing us to purchase a new car. He's fine; car totalled. He's been driving Ford's for some years now and the only new car he's seriously interested in is a Ford - not just because they have a good product, but because they've put their reputation on the line refusing govt. handouts, and as far as he's concerned, of the big 3, the only company that hasn't been acting arrogantly towards the consumer. He feels strongly that those things alone have kept his loyalty to Ford.

I bought my 2008 Ford Ranger last year. It is a great truck and it offers a sense of pride to support a company that actually said no to government intervention in it's business.

I understand a Union wanting the best for it's members. What I don't understand is that a Union often will not recognize that the only way a company can reward it's employees is if the company is profitable.

I work for a machine shop where most of our employees understand that the only chance we have for more money is to make the company more money. This is one reason we have been able to survive this economic slowdown.

Yeah...you could by a Dodge van...owned by Daimler (or is it Fiat this week?), no more "american" in make...and at the bottom of every quality rating known.

Oh...and the government has their nose in that company.

Kudos to Ford, for thumbing its nose at the Imperial government and its union bedfellows. May their tribe increase.

The Dodge is to tall. It would cost an extra 20 bucks every time I wanted to ride a Washington State ferry.

Ford is finally making a decent family car, I suspect because they hired Whatshisname from Boeing to run it.

Boeing was making great planes until Boeing bought McDonald-Douglas and replaced all the Boeing old timers with the failed McDonald-Douglas administration. Today's paper, Boeing claims that the 787 will fly before new years - more than two years late. This design/production failure and delay of 2 years is because the Machinists walked out for a week and not because Boeing sent vital production off shore, right?
