Here is the addy of a group doing someting about this problem:

    http://patriotguard.org/

I saw one of their sites a year or so ago that showed pictures of:
    6 Phelp-ites protected by
    2-dozen policemen from
200 bikers at the funeral of
    ONE AMERICAN HERO.

    tenor,

So do I, but not to disrupt funeral services of anyone, especially not returning military.

    Salamander,

It's not gossip. Phelps' tactics are well known. Do you dispute that?

I actually took the time to listen to one of his sermons off his website today. Not only is he very bad at expository preaching. He has a martyr complex. He also is vulgar and judgmental and he swears in his sermons. Incredible amount of hatred in his message.

I think Phelps is a cult leader and his church is his cult.

    Sal,

You make a good point. We should confront errant brothers, and those who are not Christians that are tearing down the church.

Side note...I did attempt to converse with his daughter several years ago. When I asked if their venemous approach could be driving away people from Christ, I was yelled at and called a "closet homosexual" (I've cleaned up her language). She indicated to me that anyone who didn't favor the death penalty for homosexuals ("God's penalty for [slur]" in her words), "might as well be having sex with them."

What do you say to such moronic drivel? They're a pathetic bunch. I hope that they come to know Christ...maybe Phelps will too!

I do not think it is gossip to discuss the public actions and statements of a person who acts in public such as Phelps. He is not acting in privacy away from the public eye. If it were gossip to do this, we would not be able to discuss the statements and actions made by any public figure.

Paul rebuked Peter to his face in the Bible for his behavior with the Judiazers. There was no indication Paul talked to him privately first. Public actions demand public comment, especially actions such as done by Phelps.

They just protested a funeral of a kid from my home town today.

I just called them to tell them that what they did was in poor taste and the lady who answered the phone gave me their party line that my calling them was in poor taste, I don't read Luke 13, God hates fags, I was there to worship a dead body, etc etc and that the dead soldier would want the Westboro people at his funeral protesting.

What is wrong with these Westboro people? :BangHead:

I really feel sorry for the deceased soldier's family that they had to endure the scorn of these people. The young sergeant died in a chopper crash in Washington state.

Please pray for the family of Sgt. Thomas Clarkston.

As I understand it, Phelps was ordained as a Southern Baptist, and later fell out with them, and appropriated our (Primitive Baptist) name. I know of NO Primitive Baptist that would have ANY thing whatsoever to do with him or his cult. Hate isn't what we are about.

I'm not sure about the rest of you, but just hearing the name "Fred Phelps" and "Westboro Baptist" makes my skin crawl.
I often let people know that he/they don't speak for baptists or Christians, or for the Christ we serve.

What strikes me is he takes our name, yet nothing he preaches or claims to believe is anything like Primitive Baptist doctrine.

I think he likes the name simply because it helps his claim to be standing where the original Baptists stood. I don't know about you all, but I don't see writings of any Old Baptist from back in the old days about homosexuals, and all those not calling for their deaths, automatically being sent to hell.

My personal opinion is, Phelps was assaulted/molested by a man when he was younger and this is the way he vents his hatred against that man. He may have even enjoyed it, which would make is hatred pf the man, and of himself, that much more concentrated.

I feel sorry for him, I really do. There is no good news in his sermons and he is taking no joy in the salvation that our Lord has given us.

That said, if he starts protesting at the funeral of one of my loved ones, he's going to get a fat lip.

Someone needs to hire a bunch of big, hairy homosexual men to follow his group around everywhere wearing biker gear and leather short-shorts. That would be a sight.
