Gloating Liberals

Let's try to define the word liberal. At this site http://www.yourdictionary.com/liberal

which uses definitions from Webster's New World Dictionary, I think the most relevant definition is:

Liberal

favoring reform or progress, as in religion, education, etc.; specif., favoring political reforms tending toward democracy and personal freedom for the individual; progressive

Conservative

tending to preserve established traditions or institutions and to resist or oppose any changes in these as in conservative politics

This is the classic definitions of liberal and conservative as applied to politics. Liberals support reform or progress. Conservatives resist change.

From a Christian or a Democratic perspective, liberals might be considered to be doing the right thing in some situations while in another situation conservatives might be considered to be right. Most wealthy Americans were against the American Revolution. Some even say that most Americans in general were against it. This would be considered to be a conservative position because they supported the status quo. Who was right? I think all of us would say the liberals (Sons of Liberty) were right. On the other hand, some (not all) liberals support such things today as gay marriage. Most if not all of us would agree that that is wrong.

The leaders of the Protestant revolution were certainly liberals. They wanted to change and then to break away from the Catholic church which had controlled Christianity for hundreds of years. I think we'd all agree that these liberals were right. Theologically, Baptists have fought to preserve the basic tenets of the faith like the crusification, bodily resurection and ascention of Jesus Christ who was wholly divine and yet wholly human and was born of the virgin Mary. We would all agree (I think) that this is correct.

So sometimes liberals have done the right thing and sometimes conservatives have done the right thing. It depends on the situation. People switch back and forth if they are intellectually honest between the two depending on the situation. Calling one Absolute Good and the other Absolute Evil is simply not true.

 

So when Republicans changed welfare and the Democrats resisted the change the Republicans were the liberals and the Democrats were the conservatives?

And when the Republicans cut taxes and the Democrats resist the Republicans are the liberals and the Democrats are the conservatives?

 

How did Republicans change welfare? It was President Clinton who put in the welfare law a requirement to work if possible. Exactly what did the Republicans do?
