I am in Alabama and it seems so many Christian young people, and adults have this false idea that going to church on Sunday and wednesday is all God requires and is you serving God. I think we need to wake up out of this false idea that is not Bibically based. It makes me upset to see Christians who think by attending church when the doors are open that some how they have done their good deed for the week. The Christians of this nation need to wake up we are more about "God what can you do for me" but we need Christians who will say "God what can I do for you" We need to stop living conforming, and comfort zone lives. We need to stop warming the pews and start serving God with all we got. We have all these books out now all about God blessing us and us getting all these great things from God and all that is fine and dany but we have this belief that as long as we go to church God will bless us. If you read the Bible every time it is us that is required to take the step and serve God not God serve us. If my people shall humble (we are required to do the first thing) ... and seek my face ( not his hand ) THEN (THEN after we do the moving we do the stepping forward) will I bless this land. It is no longer God bless american we dont do any thing to deserve Gods blessings. I challenge every one of you with "America bless God" Let us as Christians get this false mentality out of our heads of just being ok with going to church and nothing more. God requires more than going to church. And if we ever want to see God work and move we need to wake up and start serving God. We need Christians that are consumed with a passion for serving God , more than just going to church but a passion that every second of every day we are about Gods work. We need Christians who wont settle for ordinary Christianity but want more and long for more. I challenge me, and you and all of us to pursue God in an awesome way. To do more than just going to church get a passion for God, seek Gods face not His hand. We need Christian youth who wont be apathetic, and adults who wont be pew warmers. We need acts 4 Christians (read acts 4 great chapter) we need Christians who desire to serve God in an awesome way. I challenge you all with this and me to all of us need to God bless -John

We go to church on Sunday and Tithe our 10% surley that is all that is required. I suppose that would be a joke if it wasnt that the attitude of that idea is genuinley accepted by different people.

Yo, Ben, that is sad but true.

Here in the USofA, it is "church lite". You are in good standing if you attend 2 times a month and give about 4-5%

Yikes! 2 times a month! At visitation this past Tuesday, a guy in my S/S class and his wife (who teaches a women's class) were on the list as non - attenders. They had gone to Alaska for a two week vacation and two Sunday's absent calls for a visit, card and call! LOL

I've been at church for some lesson, visitation or meeting 5 times in this past week!

    Dallasdid, AMEN AMEN AMEN!

So few Christians realise we are supposed to be "..a royal priesthood, a holy nation.." etc :(

An expansion/paraphrase/whatever of Matthew 13:45-46 ("Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. {46} When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.) I heard a few years ago comes to mind-->A man saw a pearl that he just had to have. He asked the owner what he wanted for it. The owner asked him back how much the man had in his wallet. The man opened his wallet and counted the money. The pearl's owner said "give me the money, now what else do you have?" The man looked at the pearl again, then told the owner about his car. The owner asked for the car, "and what else?" The man thought for a minute again and said his house. The owner said "give me the house, now what else?" The man looked at the pearl again, thought for a longer period of time, and then said his family. The pearl's owner said "ok, give me them too, now what else do you have?" The only thing the man had left was his life, however he had to have that pearl, so offered his life for it. The pearl's owner shook the man's hand and said "Deal. I will give you the pearl. And I will LEND BACK to you everything you gave for it, but remember it is all mine."

Diane... we do the same thing through our Sunday School. If someone is AWOL for 2 weeks in a row, they get a card and a call!

Problem we have is keeping up with those who attend worship only and are not a part of a Sunday School class. (Yep, it happens!) Do you have a way of keeping up with those folks? (Like you, I attend a rather large church...avg. 1300.)

does God require church attendance? Seems to me...the word "require" isn't really something that God does.

I don't just go to church, I read my Bible and study and pray. But nobody ever told me that God "required" me to do it. I desire to do those things...guess it's a good thing that nobody told me this before...because given how I am..I'm sure I wouldn't go if anyone ever told me that I had to.

I think it's more genuine when you want to do something...and it means a lot more to God then when you do it because you're "required" to.

    Okay...rant over. ;)

I'd like to challenge all of you to make ONE phone call today to invite someone to church or tell them you missed them last week.

ALL Sunday School teachers should be contacting missing class members. I got my list of kids who are in my class and the teacher from last year said 'Six haven't come but once or twice all year'. Well.... They should have gotten their post cards introducing me on Thursday or Friday and I'm calling every family today!

Diane, sorry challenge denied [IMG] It is 1:43 am Sunday morning, and while I am still up finishing off printing the Sunday school newsletter, I doubt many others share my hours [IMG]

As for other comments, spot on mate! [IMG] When our kids are AWOL we ring and see if they are ok. Of late I have started to show some of the kids some guitar tricks, so I see those ones through the week now too.

As mum and myself put it when Church sorted out it's "who is doing what" list for the year: We feel that being a Christian is not just a hour or so on Sunday!

Well, second side of newsletter is printing, and I still have to dismantle my surround sound speaker system to take with me for the morning (video day), so I better get off this for now and start that [IMG]

Oh great, black cartridge just ran out...As Foghorn Leghorn saith "Lucky, I say, lucky I carry a spare..."

2:03am...The speakers are dismantled and are in box ready, the black cartridge is changed and print is about half way done. Now all I have to do in the morning is unplug my video and CD player...You know, sometimes I almost wish I were Amish ;)

2:03 a.m. and still preparing to share Jesus with kids in Sunday School. Pete, my boy, you are an inspiration! We should all be so dedicated.

Church on Sunday is a plus not a must. In New testament times the Christians met whenever they could and often daily. In the Old testament, the saints went to the temple daily. Not too many years back Catholics went to church every day.

Christian service is a life, not a church meeting. We simply go to church to refuel for another week of showing forth the Christ in us, the hope of things to come.

    Cheers,

    Jim

"He hath shewed thee, O man, what is god; and what doeth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly , and to love mercy and to walk humbly with thy God" Micah 6:8

Sorry. If you are providing this verse to me to show that God requires a person to go to church, as you can see, it doesn't say that.

If you are interpreting "walk humbly with thy God" as go to church, then I can only say that a person can go to church without walking humbly with God and can walk humbly with God without going to church. And to say this scripture says that...can be disproven just by reading it.

But if you have any other scriptures that say "church going is a requirement of God"...I would be happy to look at them. I just don't remember ever seeing one that actually said that. ;)

This is an excellent point: As Adrian Rogers put it, "We have a new wanter." It is not that doing these things makes us more saved or Holy, or any such thing, it is a natual result of salvation to want to learn more about, and do more for the One who loved us and gave Himself for us.
Going to services EVERY time the door is open, certainly, that is not required. There is an admonition, however, about forsaking. (I have to write from memory here at work, and the passage reference I can't remember, but it is very well known) "Forsake not the assembling of yourselves together, as the manner of some is, especially as ye see the day approaching." When one skips a service, that is one thing. One who has FORSAKEN services for several weeks, IMHO, that is quite another matter.

I'm very familiar with this verse. You're right, it's one that most Christians could resite without looking it up. Pastors like to use it to instill that thought about going to church in our heads.

I hate to be picky. But this verse doesn't say it's required either. You see, we are admonished to do what is best for us. Quite a bit of the Bible falls into this catagory as well. But nowhere in the Bible does it say that we are required by God to go to church.

Old lawyers trick to ask a question that the person asking already knows the answer to. (I'm not a lawyer, but once upon a time, I did consider it)

I apologize for not replying sooner. I've been very busy. ;)

    Psalms 122:1
1 A Song of Ascents. Of David. I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go into the house of the Lord."

Maybe not a command... but certainly a priviledge and a joy!
