It's not uncommon for high school seniors to try to make themselves stand out from the crowd during graduation ceremonies, maybe with something benign like writing "Hi Mom" on their robes or doing a funny dance on the walk across stage. But one small-town Alabama student immortalized the moment and got more than he bargained for en route to receiving his diploma — a trip to jail.

And the parents blamed the school!

    What a bunch of crock!!

Parents that fail to raise their children with common sense deserve what they get... Heartache!

The leader of the family(?) 'succeeding' by example and excuses.....pity.
    Agree. Appropriate response.

This young man may have some special problems...... but most behaviorial problems are still amendable to the guidance of good discipline by those in authority. When a child's behavior is wrong, a good parent maintains his strength of discipline and authority by teaming with others in authority: Siding with the child when the child is obviously in the wrong, gives mixed signals to the child....but the chief example is that 'authority' and 'rules' don't matter.

Children are sensitive and learn quickly how to divide 'authority' ...... between discipline differences of mom and dad...... or parents and school authorities ...... and, eventually, the division may continue to make problems in employment OR flow over to problems in living by societies rules.

So his parents complain that his and their graduation experience was 'ruined'....how selfish considering that.......
they excused their son for ruining the 'dignified' experience of his class.

Years ago, I lived not far from Arab (pronounced Ay-rab.....hey, it's Alabama; what can I say?) and did some work in some churches there. I know a couple of folks mentioned in the story. I have no doubts this fella was a troublemaker, and earned what he had coming to him.

If there were a law that holds parents responsible for how their kids turn out, I'd arrest the parents along with the kid. they're the ones who raised him, and his behavior reflects on them.

I hope he joins the Marines, not the Navy.

He'll get more discipline in the corps in three months than he got in his 18 years with his family.

It does take a certain level of sophistication to get that jar over your head. Just kidding. Anyway, it's true true even a Marine DI can't reverse this dudes' stupidity. At least not in this day and time. Now there was a time when the DI could literally give such stupidity a swift kick in the butt or a back hand across the face.
