    Hi Donna,
We have both. After the service we have donuts and coffee in the narthex. Just a way to encourage fellowship.

I like the idea of taking a poloroid to help remember names. I also like the idea of "catching the visitor" at the door, also. Some people wouldn't like to be mentioned by name from the pulpit, but I'm sure they let the couple at the door know this.

When we were church hunting, we didn't want to be visited by churches (we were bitter at the time...didn't want to know anyone...just went to warship and find a church home).

I can't say enough how happy we are that the Lord led us where we are now.

Our greeters are a married couple. They hand out the bulletins as we come through the door.

In larger churches we've seen a pulpit in the middle of the hall entrance (these are VERY large churches) and the greeter has maps, bulletins, visitor cards, tracts, etc under the pulpit to hand out. It was like an information desk...pretty cool.

We have ladies who work as greeters at the Welcome Center. Men work as greeters in the parking lot.

A church that we were members of the pastor carried a camera with him and took pictures of new people in the church. He would write their name down to coresspond to the picture.
Then he would commit their name to memory, he never forgot a name.

Just a thought about the need for greeters:

A couple of Sundays ago (on a Sunday night), my family and I visited a large Baptist Church in Hixson, TN (Chattanooga).

The music was excellent. So was the preaching. But not one person said a word to us, not one handshake, not one "glad you're with us", not one smile.

When the pastor finished preaching, several men (that looked like body guards) escorted him through a door behind the platform. No interaction at all with the congregation.

Although the message that was preached was wonderful, and the music sounded professional, this one visit made me sure that I could never call this church "home".

I'm so glad I go to a church where everyone (not just the greeters) makes visitors feel welcome.

No greeters, just 2 burley deacons who will give you the welcoming nod and pass you a bulletin.
