Gun Registration

First, let me say that I live about 7 miles from where the church shooting occurred yesterday; I'm not trying to make light of the situation, and I pray for all those involved, including the suspect.

The point of this thread is to address the various gun registration laws that are in effect, and those that are being considered. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the suspect in this case was in violation of Illinois state law by not possessing a Firearms Owner ID (FOID) (http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/ne...EB1CA304D8EA6198625757400146485?OpenDocument).

A recent piece of legislation was a topic of discussion on this board, regarding a proposed law to register all guns (also introduced in Illinois).

If anything, this is further evidence that such laws do not work. Requiring a FOID did not stop this individual from acquiring weapons. Yet, I foresee that within a week, we'll have new introductions at both state and federal levels for stricter gun registration.

How do we get this concept across? Making the ownership of a gun harder is not fixing the problem; we have to re-focus on the repercussions of using a gun.

But let us not forget that our society is following the "spanking is bad" principle; we have an aversion to punishing someone for their crime.

What do y'all think?

There was a church shooting about a year ago that was less deadly because a member had a concealed weapon license and was able to take out the individual before he could take any more life. As long as there are guns there will be criminals that have them. You can not disarm the populace and expect them to be able to defend and protect their property and lives. You would need an army to be able to have an effective police force and once you have made that turn you'll find yourself living in a police state.

It is the duty of every citizen in a free society to protect themselves if they want to remain free.

That is a GREAT video! Having lived in England for 3 years almost 20 years ago, I've told folks about how every night, even with gun restrictions, you heard a report every night about someone robbing someone using a gun.

All gun laws will do is hinder the honest person. A criminal will not heed the law and a law is only as good as the person enforcing it. Its just like the speed limit, you have people that obey the law and those that dont, how many of those slip by speeding before My Police man gets one of them. Come to Memphis on Interstate 40 about 5pm in a 65mph zone and drive 65mph and see if you dont get ran over. They catch one out of thousands, it will be the same with gun laws also, the honest man is the one that will get hurt.:praying:
