Liberal McCarthyism
Bigotry and hate aren't just for right-wingers anymore.

BY LANNY J. DAVIS
Tuesday, August 8, 2006 12:01 a.m. EDT

EXCERPT

WASHINGTON--My brief and unhappy experience with the hate and vitriol of bloggers on the liberal side of the aisle comes from the last several months I spent campaigning for a longtime friend, Joe Lieberman.

This kind of scary hatred, my dad used to tell me, comes only from the right wing--in his day from people such as the late Sen. Joseph McCarthy, with his tirades against "communists and their fellow travelers." The word "McCarthyism" became a red flag for liberals, signifying the far right's fascistic tactics of labeling anyone a "communist" or "socialist" who favored an active federal government to help the middle class and the poor, and to level the playing field.

I came to believe that we liberals couldn't possibly be so intolerant and hateful, because our ideology was famous for ACLU-type commitments to free speech, dissent and, especially, tolerance for those who differed with us. And in recent years--with the deadly combination of sanctimony and vitriol displayed by the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter and Michael Savage--I held on to the view that the left was inherently more tolerant and less hateful than the right.

Now, in the closing days of the Lieberman primary campaign, I have reluctantly concluded that I was wrong.

The extreme left can be every bit as evil and vicious as the Karl Roves on the right.

No side has a monopoly on virtue or patriotism. I hope the liberal stops for a second to realize that he, too was assuming this.

When we start to think God is on our side, that is when we have joined the opposition to God.

Lanny Davis has come out of his cocoon and finally realized who really owns the democrat party.

The crazies of MoveOn and Soros have been loudly proclaiming their ownership of the democrat party for a while and Davis just now noticed.

Maybe that's a good sign.

That's not what he wrote.

He was decrying the tactics associated with the radical right-wing, now practiced by some of the supporters of Lamont such as "...[his publicly pro-Lieberman friend's] clients were blitzed with emails attacking him and threatening boycotts of their products if they did not drop him as their attorney." Furthermore, he wrote that Lamont's campaign is largely self-financed. He didn't mention Soros or Move-On indulging in Coulterish tactics.

You seem to be using his column to indiscriminately berate people like him - liberal antiwar Democrats.

Isn't it funny. This stuff must really be part of an alien stand up comedy routine.

Trash TV
Trash (no) morality
Trash news
Trash left wing agenda to remove Christianity from our history books
Oh, yeah - trash talk kings can move to satellite to escape the laws that can only protect us a little from the obscene.

Who said it was? He just hasn't put it all together yet.

It's encouraging that he noticed anything at all.

Not as a quote -- but I did like what I read about his father teaching about the bad republicans. Now his eyes are open -- democrats are human, too, just as political, and their ends justify their means - no matter how mean. Neither party has an edge on hypocrisy.

Perhaps that's why some become so very defensive!

Carpro implied that that was the gist of it, which it was not.

Or perhaps some become defensive when attacked...

First you say he "finally realized who really owns the democrat party" when nothing he wrote addresses that at all, then you say he "just hasn't put it all together yet". "Realized" and "hasn't put it together" contradict each other, carpro. His piece was different than you say it is.

Unfortunately you may be right. He may not fully realize it at all.

Maybe I over-reacted.

I was just so encouraged by the fact that a liberal as staunch as Davis noticed the vitriol of his party base at all. Most are in total denial.

It doesn't say much for him that he didn't seem to be aware it existed at all. What planet has he been living on?

I can't think of any liberal who's as hateful as Ann Coulter.

Liberal n.
1.
Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry.
Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad-minded.
Of, relating to, or characteristic of liberalism.
2. Liberal Of, designating, or characteristic of a political party founded on or associated with principles of social and political liberalism, especially in Great Britain, Canada, and the United States.
Tending to give freely; generous: a liberal benefactor.
3. Generous in amount; ample: a liberal serving of potatoes.
4. Not strict or literal; loose or approximate: a liberal translation.
5. Of, relating to, or based on the traditional arts and sciences of a college or university curriculum: a liberal education.
Other than "loose", I can't think of any of this that applies to Ann Coulter.

You are exactly right. When it come to being hateful, Ann Coulter is definitely in a class by herself...thank goodness!

There are liberals who are every bit as hateful as the most hateful conservatives.

Yeah, unfortunately hateful stupidity is not bound to any particular political persuasion. The left's traditional policy of tolerance and incusiveness might make it a little less attractive to such individuals, but we do have our share.

The left dumped those traditions long ago.

One of the most recent examples is found when one compares the 2004 Republican and Democrat Presidential conventions and the diversity of their speakers.

Not at all, although there has been movement of the Democratic Party rightwards.

Yeah, right - let's count tokens and compare.

You have to react that way in order to keep dodging the obvious fact that your party has been taken over by quacks and crazies.

I understand.

I must have missed the Democrat National Convention's pro life speaker.

My party, carpro? Which do you imagine my party to be? You ass-u-me too much, it seems.

Evidently not.

If you say so.
