My father-in-law has to deal with the VA all the time. If it is representative of government healthcare, then I don't want anything to do with it. He waits weeks for the same appointments that I get into within days. He is routinely denied services that I get easily.

And there should be only one model of automobile for all Americans - rich and poor and middle class.

And one size and type of house for all Americans - rich and poor and middle class.

And one style of dress for all Americans - rich and poor and middle class.

Come to think of it there should be only one class of Americans - no rich and no middle class - just poor.

Then we would all be the same.

Health care is not in the same area of necessity as the items you mention.

Why? Don't all Americans deserve shelter?

Don't all Americans deserve to be clothed?

Isn't an automobile a virtual necessity in our society?

Why do you single out health care?

Don't you care whether all Americans have a place to live or clothes to wear or a car to get to work or the store or to the doctor's office?

If you don't understand the difference, targus, it is beyond my ability to explain it to you. If you are just wanting to be smart alecky, I'm not playing.

I am just trying to understand your position.

Why should all Americans be entitled to governement health care (at taxpayer expense) without the option to opt out for an alternative of their own choice but are not entitled to the same in other areas of need such as housing, clothing and transportation?

    I should also add nutrition.

If you can't explain the difference it may be because you haven't thought it out.

From KenH's quote earlier of the brilliant plan that will save our souls. It comes from the all-knowing, all-powerful keepers of all things good, the most reverend government of the Peoples' Republic of the United States:

    Of course they do. Lie.

Since when has the government ever instituted a program that they did not run? Baloney. Lie.

Because now...I have a choice. Under your "plan," there's no competition, choice, or incentive for these guys to improve. Misleading, at least.

More misleading. This would lead you to think that all insurance companies deny everything and give the shaft to all their customers. When you have the spare time, look through the thousands of articles about people who end up in trouble thanks to stupid government regulations...overzealous bureaucrats...a system that doesn't care...

They did make one true statement. It is a "no brainer."

I thought it was telling when KenH stated, "I don't care if it is (unamerican) or not."

    Just wow.

Simple fact is your question cannot be answered without self incrimination.

It is proposed to cost 1 trillion, 860 billion dollars PER YEAR, and includes repealing GWB's 1991 tax cuts.

And we can expect long waits for substandard treatment, just like everyone else that has some form of national health care.

    1) Health care is already consuming around 16% of our GDP.

Won’t it require a massive imposition of new taxes to fund this program?

In a word… No! Those Americans who currently subscribe to commercial health insurance already pay huge and ever spiraling amounts in monthly premiums to maintain an ever shrinking level of coverage. National health insurance will simply require participating members to pay a similar monthly health insurance premium, perhaps in the form of a tax (but it's still the same thing as a premium no matter what you call it**), but into the New Medicare system instead - on a stable, affordable, progressive (sliding scale) basis. For example, those in the lower income brackets will pay very low premiums according their financial ability; some may not be able to pay anything at all. Those in the middle will pay a reasonable but affordable premium and those in the very high income brackets will pay a little bit more in accordance with their abilities, but the premiums will be fair and reasonable at all levels and all will be covered! In addition, under the New Medicare, there will be a new focus on preventative medical health care. Up until now, this has not been widely offered by private health insurance carriers because it does not tend to generate immediate profits but experts agree that over time it will not only save additional billions in medical costs nationwide but also contribute dramatically to improving the overall level of health for all Americans as well.

**Whatever they call it - It's very important to keep in mind that this is NOT an ADDITIONAL tax but a REPLACEMENT for current private health premiums.

    2) Won’t cost controls reduce the availability and quality of medical care?

No they won’t. Don’t let them scare you with this one either. There will still be plenty of money available for doctors, nurses, health care workers, to maintain very high incomes. The concept of corporate "for profit" hospitals will have to be seriously re-evaluated and pharmaceutical companies will have to submit to negotiated contracts like they do with the VA and in many other countries around the world, but there will still be plenty of money to go around. In fact there will actually be more money available overall once the costly burden of trying to manage the blinding and overwhelming complexity of the current administrative systems now in effect is eliminated in favor of the New Medicare single payer system. The fact is that inflation in this one industry is so far above the national average that reasonable and modest controls will be temporarily necessary for national health insurance to work successfully for us all. Also, currently, “for profit” health care corporations must compete on Wall Street for investor and shareholder dollars by artificially increasing health care costs and denying their services as much as possible. Once this factor is eliminated from the system, those costs are very likely to begin to stabilize by themselves to a very large degree almost immediately making the need for any significant outside controls rare and short term.

Unless one has health, then the other items you mention don't mean much to a dead person.

    No a vaild arguement.

If one does not have a home (shelter) one would not have good health.
If one does not have proper clothing one would not have good health.
If one does not have proper nutrition (food) one would not have good health.
If one does not have adequate transportation (for most areas of the country this means a car) one could not get to the health care facility.

All of these things are necessary to live.

So why do you choose health care as the one thing that the government should provide at taxpayer expense - without the option to opt out or to pay for your own? As you said - rich, poor or middle class.

By your same logic why shouldn't the government provide all these essential needs to all people - rich, poor, or middle class - at taxpayer expense?

Personally, health care is the area that I want to see the government handle as a single payer, not the others. If other folks want other areas handled that way then they can make the argument for those areas.

Ken H - there are several reasons why health care costs are increasing.

One factor is the continuing advancement in technologies and procedures being available. As these new options are available patients are asking for them and expecting insurance companies to pay for them. So insurance premiums go up accordingly.

The increase in non-essential surgeries such as plastic surgery places demands on the system. For instance doctors who would otherwise practice general medicine instead opt to practice in plastic surgery and the demand for doctors and the salaries paid to doctors increase.

Part of the cost of drugs is for research. Patients are constantly looking for the new drug that will take care of their illness. If you attempt to artifically control the consumer cost of drugs you will kill future research into new drugs.

This is much more than a mere matter of health care system management costs. Government meddling into the health care system will have unintended adverse consequences.

Well, targus, when the cost of health care becomes so high as costs continue to escalate under the current system that no one but the rich can afford an operation, or drugs, what then?

So then it comes down to a "feeling" for you.

    No logical arguement.

No justification for taking rights away from others.

No justification for taking yet more money away from taxpayers.

It's just something that you "want".

The solution is to provide solutions to only those who are in need.

If someone does not have health insurance because their job does not provide it and they do not earn sufficiently to afford it - come up with a limited solution to solve that limited problem.

Leave the options and rights of others in place.
