    First, welcome to the forum. Yes, baptism is important as it is a commanded sacrament for believers.

    Its importance is not for salvation- that is, not in order to have eternal life, but signifying that you are going to live for God and not for the world. 1 Corinthians 1:17.

    The person being baptized must be a follower of Jesus, a believer.
    A proper baptism should only occur when a person is old enough to make a decision to believe.
