As Chick-fil-A President and Chief Operating Officer Tim Tassopoulos told Bisnow, the company had initiated multi-year charitable giving contracts with the FCA and Salvation Army a number of years ago. Those contracts expired this year, meaning Chick-fil-A was not contractually obligated to donate money to either organization for the first time in years.

Chick-fil-A used this opportunity to restructure their charitable giving model, instead focusing on local nonprofits in individual communities, moving away from multi-year commitments. Starting next year, Chick-fil-A intends to donate $9 million dollars to Junior Achievement USA, which supports local education and Covenant House International, to combat homelessness. In addition, Chick-fil-A will donate $25,000 to a local food bank every time it opens a new location.

“This provides more focus and more clarity,” Tassopoulos said. “We think [education, hunger and homelessness] are critical issues in communities where we do business in the U.S.”

Tassopoulos said charitable grants will be reviewed annually, and both faith-based and non-faith-based organizations will be considered for such giving. “It’s just the right thing to do,” Tassopoulos said. “To be clear, caring, and supportive and do it in the community.”

    "Charitable giving contracts" have expired.

    "Contractually obligated to donate."

    Really.

I am not sure that The Salvation Army does much good in rescue missions anymore because the government has taken away their ability to require people to attend service before eating supper and spending the night. The Salvation Army does have long-term alcohol and drug abuse treatment facilities. Many of these receive large amounts of government funding through mental health agencies although actual Salvation Army Officers work for minimum wage. The main problem with transients is that state governments do not want to pay to provide medical treatment for them in state hospitals. The Salvation Army in the USA probably sends money to The Salvation Army in other countries. When the federal government stoops to regulating rescue missions, then you can see that the feds are interfering in churches on a very local level. I think that The Salvation Army should have the right to refuse service to anyone who does not want to attend their religious services. It is a Christian outreach and The Salvation Army is a denomination. Here in Indianapolis, we have the Good News Mission, a local outreach. They do not take one penny from any branch of government and so therefore they can preach the gospel first before supper and lodging for the night and breakfast in the morning.

Ramifications may hinge on just what the “non-faith-based organizations” are about.
