Hippocrates in the Church

    A lady at a church that I once attended said that in the course of inviting people to church, she would sometimes get the response, "There are too many hippocrates in the church."
    Her response would be "That's not so. We have room for one or two more, in case you want to come."

    I think you meant hypocrites, not the Greek physician of the 4th and 5th centuries B.C.
    Or maybe the people who say that just don't like doctors.

    In such contexts, one is as likely to hear a mispronunciation such as “hypocrates” (hippo-crates) as anything resembling erudition, and probably more so.
