Your thoughts on this quote from a Christian publication:

"The Bible Teaches against worldly amusements, sports, and entertainments.

Pleasures highly esteemed among worldlings, such as cards, dancing, swimming pools, prize fightings, ball games, movies, television, and such like, are an abomination to God."

Scripture references given were Luke 16:15 AND 1 Peter 4:4.

    What do you think?

Maybe they are coming from this point of view:

Who is the Lord of our money and our time? We we be judged on how we utilize these things. Did we use them to spread the gospel or did we use them to satisfy the lusts of our flesh?

    Just some thoughts????

I don't think I would call those things abominations, but I personally find them unnecessary. Since I have completely surrendered my life to Christ I have found my desire for entertainment gradually slip away. That's not to say I never indulge. I watch a movie about once every two months or so. I don't believe it's a sin to do so. I agree with what S. Jensen said: How are you spending your money and time? I would go on to say: What is your focus?

I think some people use entertainment and other activities to placate themselves so that they don't have to think about the serious issues in life. While one could argue that it's good to get away from the serious stuff once in awhile for your own sanity [IMG], I think it can be dangerous if it becomes too frequent.

In my opinion, a hobby is not an abomination unless it becomes an idol. An idol is anything that becomes more important to you than God and your relationship with Him.

Don't let anyone condemn you for having a hobby. There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ. [IMG]

I have to agree with footwasher-

Can you imagine someone where EVERYTHING was all God, God, God. I don't say that as a bad thing, but there is nothing wrong with doing other things. I myself enjoy camping, working on websites, hanging out with my friends (golfing, bowling, skating, etc), I love biking, football, and I'm a big book buff. None of these things are directly spent of furthering God's kingdom- but are they wrong?

    Until Next Post, Adam

I personally don't think God gave us this beautiful world and good friends not to enjoy it/them.

Footwasher, I wonder if you don't have things like art in your home, do you have a tv, radio? Do you send cards, write letters? You do use the interent. All of these are either hobbies, or started as someones hobby.
These things are not people not wanting to face serious things in life. Do you ever relax? What do you do to relax?
    Wouldn't that be a hobby.

People are always so willing to put otheres down because they have different views, or do things differently.

Hey! Did I put anybody down? I thought I was just looking at the issue from all angles! [IMG]

And no, I don't watch TV unless I'm with someone else who puts it on. The books I read are about Christian growth, and the Interent is used for ministry. I find those things both stimulating and relaxing at the same time. But this is a personal preference. I'm an unusual person and have never felt the need to be entertained.

I said hobbies are okay as long as they don't become idols. As long as you're not putting them ahead of your relationship with God, there's nothing wrong with them.

I also said not to let anyone condemn you for having a hobby....was I not typing in English?

Footwasher, it looks like English typing to me, but one can never be sure with all the foreign keyboards out there :D I would love to jump in here and put in my two cents worth. But since the Lord is still working on me, and cleaning up my life, I better just read for now ;) Besides, my foot looks much better when it is not stuck in my mouth hehehe

I don't think it is at all needed to cut out hobbies and entertainment. Some folks are really in bondage to religious spirits to the point of everything else to do is wrong but thats not the case at all. BTW I'm not speaking of anyone on this board, I am talking about those who wrote that article and those who really believe the stuff written.

We need to use our hobbies as a means to reach people. We also need to get away from the battle once in awhile. I try to use my interests to reach the lost and disciple the saint. All except golf. I like to golf alone. They say that is a bad habit kind of like drinking alone. Even golf can be used to reach people. If your life is all about the Lord Jesus Christ, then even your leisure time belongs to Him. At least that's the way I see it from the cheap seats.
    Your servant in Christ,

    Steve,

Especially when you get that hole in one ;)

I agree with you....I think we can all use time away and God can present us with oppertunities to share him even thru our hobbies.

Saggy, when I see people take this approach, IT SCREAMS OF LEGALISM.

I wonder what the disciples did when Jesus had them go aside and rest. I realize they slept and probably none of the aforementioned hobbies were exercised, but I am quite sure fishing found its way into the mix.

From time to time, relaxation is necessary. And, relaxation comes in many different avenues.

And if you never relax you will lose it. Believe me i've come close to where all i was doing was studing (Bible and otherwise) and finally had to just stop for a couple of days, spend some time outdoors listen to my classical music, and (heaven forbid!) even watched a movie.

    Let me guess: David Cloud?

Nothing wrong with "cards, dancing, swimming pools, prize fightings, ball games, movies, television and such like".

It wasn't anything from what I read frequently, though.
