I have always memorized scripture from the KJB. All of my children memorized scriptures from the KJB.

I am home schooling my grandson (11) and he memorizes scriptures from the KJB and has no problem with it at all (and he had never memorized a scripture until this past year).

As far as understanding the verses, I explain and we discuss each verse, after he memorizes it, so I don't see that as a problem.

A good Bible Concordance does wonders...

I'm more of an ESV man now, but I have whole books of the Bible memorized in the NIV.

 

I have always memorized from the KJV, also. As I've stated many times, it is my Bible of preference. This probably stems from the fact that it is what I learned from growing up, used in Christian school for five years, and then in Bible college. I can still use other versions, and I do at times. It helps to give perspective and balance to what I'm reading.

 

As for me, I catch myself quoting in the KJV, while using the HCSB in the pulpit. The reason is, I had learned and memorized those verses in the KJV. I am working in relearning them in HCSB. I personally feel the language is easier to understand.

What I find interesting, is not that we quote in KJV... I've noticed many Christians pray in King James language. Have you noticed that also? (Now if we could just them praying in the language of the HCSB.

Why do you think so many people use King James style of language in public prayer?

 

Pete that is great. I'm not personally a fan of the NIV... but taking the time to memorize entire books of the Bible. Awsome.

BTW, I have worn out my copy of the ESV I like it as well. My translation of choice is the HCSB.

Rookiepastor, I like the HSCB also. I was an ESV man also. The ESV does make you think about what is actually being said, because often it is so literal I check the Greek to see if a verse in the NT actually says what the ESV says.

The HSCB is supposedly a very accurate translation. It is too bad that it will have an SBC stigma and a lot of people here will not look at it because of that reason.

I have yet to find one verse that has an unnatural slant toward SBC beliefs.

I have heard older people pray this way. A lot of older people also say very formal prayers. Most of our younger (up to say about 40) seem to pray more from the heart, while the older men seem to pray a speech. I am not saying this is wrong, because I think they really mean what they pray for, but it seems awfully automated at times; or at least for show.
