The first week of fiscal year 2024, the national debt increased by $344 billion. I can't envision that continuing week after week, but if it did, over 52 weeks that would be an increase of $18 trillion in one year.
Even if it slows down to what it has been the past couple of years and the increase for fiscal year 2024 ends up being "only" around $2.5 trillion, the United States is in an escalating debt crisis and the Congress continues to just kick the can down the road. The can is so dented up by now that it is becoming hardly recognizable as a can.
