ZUWAD KHALAF, Iraq — As the piles of missiles and rockets dug from the desert floor grew, smiles on soldiers’ faces turned to scowls of serious concern.
Working on a tip from an informant, soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division on Tuesday dug up more than a thousand aging rockets and missiles wrapped in plastic, some of which had been buried as recently as two weeks ago, Army officials said.

“This is the mother lode, right here,” Sgt. Jeremy Galusha, 25, of Dallas, Ore., said, leaning on a shovel after uncovering more than 20 Soviet missiles.....

....Vardaro would not comment on whether there were signs the caches had been used recently to make bombs, but the service records accompanying the missiles dated to 1984, suggesting they were buried by the Iraqi military under Saddam Hussein.

Still, the plastic around some of the rockets — of Soviet, German and French origins — appeared to be fresh and had not deteriorated as it had on some of the older munitions....

....Commanders in the 101st said knowing that an Iraqi tipped them off to the buried weapons could mean that residents in this largely Sunni Arab region about 150 miles north of Baghdad are beginning to warm up to coalition forces.

“The tide is turning,” Vardaro said. “It’s better to work with Americans than against us.”

You can certainly bet there is a lot more to be discovered.

Folks, you need to pray for the people who de-mil these weapons. It is a very dangerous job, especially since this stuff has been buried and corrosion has destroyed much of the integrity of the weapons and heat has lowered the stabilizing compounds added to both the propellants and warheads. ...very dangerous indeed.

Why do you folks buy into these false news reports? There are no weapons caches in Iraq.

Are these weapon caches conventional weapons or
    WMDs?

If you have ever seen a 1000 pound military bomb filled with tritonal explode--I think would consider it a weapon of mass destruction. Did you see the picture with the stacks of these bombs?

According to this site (linkie to How Stuff Works) that appears to be something of a "Bunker Buster". I don't know military lingo, but "Bunker Buster" don't seem to fall into the WMD category the way a nuclear bomb does.

Is that really considered a WMD by UN resolution definition or are the Bushites trying to confuse any found caches of weapons with WMDs?

Nope, do you have a linkie?

This is a wonderment, one would think the conservative owners of the liberal media would blast it W2W24/7. [IMG]

Does *that* meet your requirement or definition for a WMD?

Different stash yes, but if the weapons found by the 101st were bunker busters...what do the Iraqis need with that? We dont occupy fortresses in Iraq. Our bases are mostly tents and trailers. A bit of overkill if you ask me. Of course Iraq has always misunderstood proportionate response.

    I don't know - it's pretty vague.
That's a weird statement - Iraqis are being slaughtered left & right, their country is occupied and you lecture about "proportionate" response. What do you feel a "proportionate" response would be - invade our country?

Well...if a NBC defense officer is involved and giving quotes...just put two and two together.

Iraqis are being slaughtered by insurgents - not Americans. They do not need bunker buster bombs (that you conveniently want to shhh shhhh away as nothingness), because we dont dwell in caves in Iraq. We are pretty much out there in the open and if the insurgents could hit the broad side of a barn with their mortars, we would worry a lot more.

Overkill...ask the Kurds or the Kuwaitis about wierd proportionate response statements. Or the 12 year old girls that were taken by Presidential order by the First sons. Or all those people we fished out of the pond behind what is now the US embassy. Youre apparently watching a whole different ballgame than that which is being played.

Sorry, you lost me - what is an "NBC defense officer"? Two what and two which?

But Americans are killing Iraqi civilians (collateral damage) and slaughtering Iraqi insurgents.

I'm not "shh shhhhing" anything. I am saying that these are conventional weapons, likely hidden recently, and should not be confused with the WMDs which were given as the very reason for this war.

As far as I can tell from the news reports, these weapons are being scavenged to make the smaller car bombs and strap-on bombs. That is not to say they would not be used as designed is it were feasible to do so.

I do find it ridiculous to accuse Iraqis of "disproportionality" when their country has been invaded on, um, misinformation used to justify a "preemptive" attack.

No, but it seems as if you cannot tell the players without a card and you do not have a card. You seem to group Iraqis with Iraqis without distinction.

"Sorry, you lost me - what is an "NBC defense officer"? "

He (or she) is an officer in the military services in charge of NBC defense, usually this is their professional career field.

PS, if you are referring to 'NBC', then that was in the article you read.
