A national ID card makes good sense. These days most every adult is familiar with passwords. The ID card could have a number that was used for everything, drivers' lic, credit cards, whatever. It would be as safe as any system with a long enough password.

And before long we'll have road blocks into every city where military want to see your "papers" and if you don't have then you get to go to a re-education camp. Princess Amidala was right. "liberty does dies to the sound of applause."

And these are the same people that are calling Arizona's law requiring showing your driver's license unconstitutional?

I've already stated it in another thread.
This is what I suggest. Jail terms for employers who hire illegal immigrants. Military intervention in the mexican drug war. More boarder patrols, 24/7 electronic servaliance of every foot of boarder, repeal migrant worker welfare benefits, require emergency rooms to assertain US citizenship (provide medical care then deportation), Jail terms for landlord knowingly renting property to illegal immigrants, Housing authority verifying housing limits in all cities, have boarder states schools identify citizenship of students attending schools, charge mexico for every illegal criminal in US prisons and then withhold that amount of funding we give mexico.

I believe all of this can be done without taking away peoples rights.

Note each of these things are already being done to an extent except up to the point of notifying auhtorities. this way a person can walked down the street without being harrassed. However, these are legal non intrusive ways of dealing with the problem.

So your solution is to make everyone else responsible for identifying illegal immigrants - except the police.

No that is a police state !

But seriously, do you know for fact that a police officer can stop a person at random to ask for ID?

As I've told Thinkingstuff, it has happened to me many times over the past 40+ years. If you aren't known in that area, you will get checked at times, or wrong ethnic group for the neighborhood and so on, if you are walking or driving around the block to many times in a auto. As I've said sometimes they are watching out for your safety and sometimes for the safety of the neighbors. By the way I'm Caucasian so it is all people. Talk to drives who have the nerve to walk around in the Detroit area, they can tell you a lot, read the paper and see how many drivers are robed and or shot.

I don't see any way this will pass. With that said, I will support a Republican filibuster of this bill as long as this provision is in here.

Dems have been wanting this for some time

I have to agree. Now include what Obama said at a Michigan University this week. "It's dangerous to speak out against the government." And "decent is dangerous" Things are getting scary. How long before we have to watch out for the brown shirts.

Do you have any supporting links?

Neither of these quotes are in the speech. Where do you get this from? What is there is this, which is pro-dissent:

But we cannot expect to solve our problems if all we do is tear each other down. You can disagree with a certain policy without demonizing the person who espouses it. You can question someone's views and their judgment without questioning their motives or their patriotism. Throwing around phrases like "socialist" and "Soviet-style takeover;" "fascist" and "right-wing nut" may grab headlines, but it also has the effect of comparing our government, or our political opponents, to authoritarian, and even murderous regimes.

How about just enforcing the laws that are already on the books?

I believe you are correct to a point. I recall of being taught how many were turned back at Ellis Island for health reasons, wrong paper work, yes even wrong country at times, no sponsor and so on.

I served in the service with a few guys who were able to bring their families ( wife and children) into this country by signing up for military service, they were from Panama, Mexico, Peru and two from Africa, I don't recall which countries.

Even in my wife's' family their were a few turned back in the late 1930's for some legal reasons.

As a professor told us in class immigrations of the illegal type isn't a problem till they kill one of your family by accident or not, kick you out of your house or cost you more money. He said it is why we should watch our borders and allow the kind of people we need, it could be doctors, teachers, labors, and what ever else but it is our need. If you wish to sponsor a person and take responsibility of the person and family coming in, paying for them and helping them for four or five years they get on their feet, that would be fine too. But not just come in because you want to and not care for our requirements and our people.
