Indonesia election: More than 270 election staff die counting votes

"More than 270 election workers in Indonesia have died, mostly of fatigue-related illnesses caused by long hours of work counting millions of ballot papers by hand, an official says...."

This one blows my mind too:

20 suicides out of a population of a billion...I guess that's not too shocking.

The 270 dying from counting ballots sure had me scratching my head, though.

Death from overwork is a real thing in Asia. If you work 7 days a week, many hours over 8 every day, there is a good chance you will kill yourself. The Japanese even have a word for it: karoshi.

Karōshi - Wikipedia

"Karōshi (過労死), which can be translated literally as "overwork death" in Japanese, is occupational sudden mortality. The major medical causes of karōshi deaths are heart attack and stroke due to stress and a starvation diet. This phenomenon is also widespread in other parts of Asia..."

'Overwork death' by heart attack, stroke, stress, and starvation diet probably describes to a tee what occurred in the gulags. But in one you're a prisoner and forced to extremes, in the other you're supposedly free. An Asian phenomenon I gather.
