We'll be paying for hormone shots for Manning?

Why?

Well, here's the thing. My daughter is having a tough time paying for her books for college right now. That doesn't make me mad.

The college helps students who work on campus by taking it out of their check. Cool. They won't do it for her because there's a policy she didn't see that says they won't do it if they didn't take out student loans. Okay, it's her bill and nobody is obligated to help her out, so a little ticked that the policy was not know, as we discussed how going into debt was not a good idea and how she could live on a tight budget and still make it if she only had to work out the issue for books. Better than loans.

Then a certain someone gets on me because "I got this and that, she should apply." Okay, you got this and that because of your status, she is only a first generation American immigrant on one side, so she doesn't get the same benefits. That means she works and pays for it. SOMEONE pays for the benefits others get, that would be other citizens. Including my working child. Which is fine, I understand, but do NOT act like I'm stupid for not "figuring out" how to get it for free. Generally, typical citizens don't GET these things free. It's a bonus for you and carried by others, not free manna from an unknown source.

So I read the news.

And read that Bradley Manning decided he's a woman trapped in a man's body and wants to live as a female and start hormone therapy. He's in prison now for the next 35 years, so guess who will be paying for that?!

Now I'm just plain ticked.

I only go so far.

No, I don't think my child is entitled to free stuff. I do think that she worked her rear off to be the number one graduating student in her school and maybe, just maybe, it would benefit society a bit more to help this kid with the cost of a few college books than it would to help a convicted felon live out his gender fantasies while he sits in prison for criminal acts against our country.

I try not to be greedy or selfish, but today, I am ticked.

I'm all for helping people, but why on earth do we start with the highest cost being to something that will benefit nobody and only further perpetuate the sick mindset of a criminal already sitting in prison? And really, is prison the proper place for a guy to decide to embrace the concept of appearing more feminine?

According to what I have read, the Army currently does not provide that procedure.

The Army does provide medical services for its troops, and dependents. However it does not necessiarly cover everything. Elective comestic surgery is not porvided.

I also remember when I was in Germany - back in the late 70's the daugher of a GI was pregreant (unmarried). Since the daughter was a dependent - she recieved full medical care at Landstuhl Army Medical Hospital, however her baby was not an "authorized" dependent and and medical care for the baby had to be paid for.

Not sure what current policy is on these two issues.

In the old days when someone had a need they looked to God, their family, or their neighbors for help. The government was the last resort.

Having said that, I'm willing to send your daughter $40 to help with the books. I know tht's not what you were asking, but I'm a college student myself and I just paid almost $300 for four books, and I was touched by reading this. If you will pm me your address or church address (if you're not comfortable with giving the personal info- I understand), I will send you a money order for $40 to help out.

Perhaps some other BB members will join in to help this young hard-working lady.

Mexdeaf, that is so very sweet of you and I will let her know that if was offered, and I'm sure she'll feel the same way.
But - we did work out a plan. I was able to get an advance on my pay for half of what she needed and the other half is able to wait until our next one. Now that we know, I can work it into my budget for the following one, then she after the second semester, she can get a job in the summer off campus and take over fully financially since it won't be part of the work study. (with work study, the checks go straight to the college)

It was just one of those things where we were taken by surprise a couple days before classes started. That's a lot on an 18 yr old fresh out of high school...and it definitely makes me ponder what our government does spend money on.

I just don't understand the mentality going on with spending money on things like that when there are things that make more sense and would be better uses of our money.

And the whole college thing is weird to me. It seems like they make it almost impossible for kids NOT to go into debt and I don't understand why institutions would encourage that. Who profits if they go into debt and can't pay it back, or do enough pay it back that it is profitable? From reading the news, it sounds like debt is a major problem and that they would not want people going into debt because it's too much of a risk, or are fresh out of school kids the lowest risk, perhaps?

Manning will be at Leavenworth and the Army said they do not pay for that. He may be in prison but he is still in the Army and will be subject to the Army's standards for the next 35 years.

The Army responded to Manning's decision to seek hormone therapy with a statement.

"Inmates at the United States Disciplinary Barracks and Joint Regional Correctional Facility are treated equally regardless of race, rank, ethnicity or sexual orientation," the statement reads. "All inmates are considered soldiers and are treated as such with access to mental health professionals, including a psychiatrist, psychologist, social workers and behavioral science noncommissioned officers with experience in addressing the needs of military personnel in pre- and post-trial confinement.

"The Army does not provide hormone therapy or sex-reassignment surgery for gender identity disorder. The USDB has implemented risk assessment protocols and safety procedures to address high risk factors identified with the Prison Rape Elimination Act."

I may just be weird, but I think it is awesome that the military justifies the denial of hormone therapy as part of the Prison Rape Elimination Act. Like you said Gina, it’s nice to see a shred of common sense occasionally.
