Anybody here know if you can clean printer ink cartrages with alcohol? I have a Lexmark X1185 that has sat for awile, I reinstalled it on our puter' today & it was leaving streaks everywhere. I used the inboard cleaning & got the color pretty good but not the black. I took it out & looked & it just looks smeared over the jets. I went to their website but no help. As Far as I know noone has touched the jets(supposed to be a big no-no).

not sure, preacher. I would say try it. either way, it wasn't doing good before.

It could be a contact dirty and causing wrong signals to be sent to printer to release ink when it shouldn't.

If it sat, it may have leaked into the pad that is under the cartridge.

Use Q tip or something similar with water first. Don't wipe, just get it wet and dab the jets. If it is really caked on, wiping might be needed.

Before replacing it take a flashlight and look in the printer where the head sits, there is usually a pad that catches excess. If it is a mess clean it as best you can with alcohol.

Look around and see if there is ink anywhere else that could be getting on the paper.

My thought is usually you aren't going to hurt it too much so go for it. Have saved a lot of cartridges this way.

If all else fails, printers are cheaper than cartidges most of the time :D (Don't know about yours :)

Not quite cheaper with this one, it's a printer, copier, scanner, with fax capibilities. It seems to be a decent item for the price. I know a lot of folks don't care for Lexmark but it worked great before. My stepson had it on his system & its sat idle for bout' a month and a half. I just put it back on today & ran into this...but thanks a heap for the info.

I have had a number of lexmarks and have been fairly satisfied for the price. The multifunction ones are a bit more spendy for sure.

Q-tips and alcohol have always worked for me.

Be sure that you wear old clothes and work over newspapers and paper towels. that ink has a way of getting everywhere.
