Agreed, but the question is, are Christian colleges any better? You can learn feminism at both a Christian and secular college. You can learn evolution and a Christian or secular college. You can learn leftist politics at both a Christian and secular college. If I had to choose, I think our kids would be less likely swayed by those they know are not Christian. At least the wolves will look like wolves at a secular college.

    Where’s the generalization?

I gave my own anecdotal experience, and spoke about education in the Soviet Union.

Now the post I responded to, the one saying that studying humanities is always a stupid idea, that is a generalization. In case you needed an example.

So, studying philosophy, literature, religion, art, music, history and language is "always a stupid idea."

I think the much stupider idea is to remain ignorant of philosophy, literature, religion, art, music, history and language.

Philosophy can be read and one does not need to go to school to know about it.

Literature and the English major is literally a made up subject. English majors write books that others are literally made to read. The English Degree was invented in 1919 and it was offered at a women's college and was the precursor to Women's Studies.

A specific religion such as Christianity is not the humanities. Religious studies involves all the religions. So if you want your kid to know how to be a good Hare Krishna . . .

Art like Incredibles 2 (2018) - IMDb needs to be taught and you will likely need to go to school to get a job.

Art like Levitated Mass - Wikipedia is far more common on large college campuses. Just go and look at senior art projects.

Music is a skill that needs to be taught and I have no objection to that. However, like English, you don't need a degree to be successful. Most music programs not worthwhile.

History. Seriously? You trust professors to give a proper education in history?

Language? The number of students who graduate with a degree in Spanish and can't pass a simple teacher's exam in the subject is heartbreaking. If you want to learn a language, don't go to university, go to the country of that language and learn it. If we're at war with the country, join the Army and learn it for free by becoming a language specialist.

Colleges and universities are no longer the gatekeepers of knowledge. You can learn these subjects without having to go to a university. Just because you don't go to university doesn't mean you can't study the humanities. Just because you have a degree from a university doesn't make you knowledgeable about the humanities just like the straw man.

People can now study all of these things without having to go to college.

So, no ". . . studying philosophy, literature, religion, art, music, history and language . . ." is not a stupid idea. You were right to ask if that is what I meant. It is not what I meant.

Sending kids to college or university to study the humanities and paying $20,000 plus a year for the privilege is a stupid idea.

Yep. Keep your kids stupid and down on the farm. That way you will always be able to control every aspect of their lives.

Heaven forbid their ever study philosophy (love of wisdom).

    Or learn to appreciate literature.

And the horror of studying the other religions of the world to learn how to best reach them with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

And those who fail to study history are doomed to repeat it.

And language. Heaven forbid our kids actually learn to speak something other than broken English. My grandkids are tri-lingual. How are yours?

I don't know. Sounds like you're buying the idea that only the left can educate you. Unless you study human wisdom you're dumb? Unless you're steeped in evolution thinking you've not educated?

I'll take a someone leaned in biblical theology over a David Hawking or Nietzsche any day. In fact look at the Christians that specialize in human wisdom. Look how far we've gone astray with this kind of thinking. Look how far the Church in Europe as drifted and the American Church is right behind them.

My kids will go to conservative Christian colleges and do just fine.

1Cor. 1:20 Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

I didn't mention the left. I am talking about getting an education.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

I didn't mention, nor do I believe in, evolution.

If your reading comprehension skills are what we can expect from a bible collage, no thanks (and I used to teach at one).

You touted philosophy, not the fear of the Lord. And how much fear of the Lord is taught in secular colleges? If that's what you think is going on at colleges, you're extremely naive.

Okay, I will try to explain this one more time. Philosophy = philo + sophy. Philo = Love of. Sophy = Wisdom. Philosophy means "Love of Wisdom." The bible says that "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom."

Fear of the LORD is to be taught in the home and the church.

If you think raising your children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord is somebody else's responsibility you are much more than just naive.

If you have failed so badly to raise your children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord that they can be talked out of their faith by a few college instructors, shame on you. When we raise our kids right we have a promise from God, (Proverbs 22:6) "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it."

Wow, very surprised you're defending this. You actually think love of wisdom is the same as fear of the Lord? And if fact, you don't believe that the love of human wisdom is the opposite of the fear of the Lord?

Very confused. But I can see from this why you think it's essential go give thousands of dollars to a school that will teach your child to revere human wisdom over the fear of the Lord. If you think that's money well-spent go for it. I'll take a more conservative approach.

As the bible makes it clear that the beginning of wisdom is the fear of the LORD, yes, I believe the bible. Psalm 111:10 "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom."

Why do you say "human wisdom?" Have I ever said "human wisdom?"

If your child's faith is so weak they will revere human wisdom over Godly wisdom then you have done a terrible job raising your child and should confess that sin to the Lord.

Because that's what the college teaching of philosophy is. It's the love of human wisdom.

Please tell you don't believe that secular colleges are teaching your child to fear the biblical God?

So let me get this straight. You're advocating spending thousands of dollars to send your kids to an institution that will try to undo the fear of the Lord? Sure sounds like you're putting the Lord to the test.

I'll put my money toward schools and teachers that will teach them the deeper understandings of Scripture. you can make schools of human wisdom rich if you like.

Is it? How do you know that if you never attended a college philosophy lecture? Where do you find the word "human" in the word "philosophy?"

That is your job. Did you fail? Is your child's faith so weak he will stand for nothing and fall for everything?

My children were raised in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. The oldest is going to be 54 in December and the youngest is 44. Both went to college and both are living for the Lord all these years later.

Why would you put the Lord to the test? He is not prone to failure. But if your kid's faith is so weak they will fall for folly then it is you who has failed.

So you will pay someone to do what you won't or can't do?

Do your taxes support your state university system? Pot, meet kettle.

Wow! You believe colleges are teaching divine revelation? This is just amazing.

LOL! My job it to teach my kids the fear of the Lord and then immediately ship them off to a college that teaches the opposite?

My friend, where did you learn this nonsense? It's not from Scripture. Yet you scold others who do not do as you do, as if somehow they're in sin (or just stupid). If a Christian sends his kids to a Christian college that teaches creation you believe God is not pleased with this, that he is more please if you send them to a godless institution that hates biblical revelation.

Just amazing. But I'm glad your kids got through it.

Some do. Most don't. That is your job.

If your kids are so shallow that the first time a professor tells them the bible isn't true and they believe it that is your fault for not raising them in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

    It is called "life."

    Yes, it is.

Please post a quote where I said any such thing.

So now you attack kids and their parents if they dare not to send their kids to secular leftist colleges and make them rich. Very sad how you think.

No, once again you demonstrate an astonishing lack of critical reading skills. I am not accusing anyone of anything. I am pointing out that the bible promises us that if we raise our children properly, when they are grown they will not depart from the faith.

If children reject the bible because a college instructor says it isn't true then that child has indicated his prior instruction was less that adequate.

And you've gone back to your typical routine of making statements then denying them. You carelessly throw out comments then pretend you didn't make them.
