Israel is losing its grip on evangelical Christians

Support for Israel is weakening among evangelical Christians, prompting a new struggle for the hearts and minds of younger members of America’s largest pro-Israel demographic group.

While hard numbers are not available, evangelical leaders on both sides of the divide on Israel agree that members of the millennial generation do not share their parents’ passion for the Jewish state; many are seeking some form of evenhandedness when approaching the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“What is happening is that the hard line of Christian Zionists was not successfully passed forward to the next generation, because it was based on theological themes that are now being questioned by younger evangelicals,” said David Gushee, professor of Christian ethics and director of the Center for Theology and Public Life at Mercer University in Atlanta.

They want the same thing I want from all members of the UN.

I will add that it's not a religious issue at all for me. It's purely political. Israel is the only democracy in that part of the world as well as being our only ally. Makes it simple. I don't want them steamrolled into actions that will lead to their destruction as a nation.

It's more a question of faith in God's ability to fulfill His promises for me.

Does God really need Washington's money and weapons to fulfill His promise to Israel?

Then you are misguided.

Those who do not place their faith in Christ are condemned. That includes the Jews.

God doesn't need our money.

The Jews and the Palestinians need Christ. The money we, as a nation, give both side, is for political purposes; not to bring them to Christ.

The money we give? You mean the money the government first confiscates from us at gunpoint to give to them don't you?

Isn't that just another form of socialism? I thought you were against socialism?

Foreign aid is unconstitutional. Don't you claim to be against violating the constitution?

I've read the book of Revelation. I don't pretend to be able to understand it all but the nation of Israel is still there at the end. I tend to believe it's still there because God wills it to be. Not because Washington wills it to be.

I just can't put that much faith in man in general and Washington in particular. Maybe it's misguided but I still believe God is greater than either.

Either way whether I am misguided or not Israel is still losing it's grip on evangelical Christians.

Anyway I'm sure this will all be blamed on the liberals sooner or later. That seems to be the way it usually works out, or maybe CMG will pop in long enough to blame the libertarians. :)

Mercer University is not exactly evangelical and fundamentalist. It hardly matters what some professor there thinks. Hamas is allied with the Muslim Brotherhood whose main facility in the USA is Islamic Society of North America. The Muslim Brotherhood traces its roots to an alliance with the Nazis in World War II.

I knew that was coming. It only matters what those you agree with think, right?

It's not like you're predictable or anything CMG.

Evangelical Christians who wholeheartedly support Israel, no matter what they do, usually only do so because it advances their perceived ultimate spiritual destiny. Their (wrongheaded in my opinion) eschatology is what drives this Israel fascination.

(I eliminated the rant. Keep it together, man.)

Yeah. I've read revelation and I'm skeptical of anyone that thinks he can tell me exactly what it all means.

But John is plainspoken and so is Christ. No one comes unto the father except through the son. That's clear enough for me. They didn't make an exception for Jews.

Seems you're working at cross purposes. Your faith says one thing and your politics say another. Get it straight, poncho. Maybe you're not misguided, just confused.

The Christian left hardly matters. They are not noted for scholarship. Your article mentions the Presbyterian Church USA--everyone has known for 15 years that they were calling for divestment, along with the ordination of sodomites. But I would not call them Evangelical and in fact the article calls them mainline.

It is difficult to feel sorry for someone who uses the Romanized word for Philistine to describe themselves. As for Hamas, it is hardly a secret that the are allied with the Muslim Brotherhood and it is hardly a secret that the Muslim Brotherhood was allied with Nazi Germany. And everyone knows that the Islamic Society of North America is the Muslim Brotherhood umbrella organization in the USA.

I'm not disagreeing with you about what John or Jesus said. I get it. What I'm saying is what I said. Israel is still there at the end of the book. Whether the Jews have accepted Christ or not doesn't seem to matter the outcome is still the same.

Israel is till there when Christ returns regardless. You do agree Israel is still there when Christ returns right?

Now about those two political questions I asked you about socialism and the constitution . . . I assume you were going to answer them right?

So in other words nothing they say matters because they aren't like you. Yeah, I get it.

You make that perfectly clear in just about all your posts. It's either CMG's way or no way at all. I get it. I do.

Nope. Gonna stay on topic. You go off down that rabbit trail by yourself. You know the way. It's the same trail you always take.

Right, you seem to be doing the same as always to.

You're the one who brought politics into it so naturally now it's bash Poncho time when I ask you a political question you'd rather not answer.

Plead the fifth if you don't want to answer my questions there's no need to start insulting me over it. Sheesh.

Are you going to answer my other question? Do you agree Israel is still there at the end of the book? Or do I get another insult for asking you that one to?

I don't go to Mercer University for info--you do that, Poncho.

Support for Israel is weakening among evangelical Christians, prompting a new struggle for the hearts and minds of younger members of America’s largest pro-Israel demographic group.

This is a strange statement. The hearts and minds of evangelical Christians should be with Christ. Support for Israel just happens to be a byproduct.

While hard numbers are not available, evangelical leaders on both sides of the divide on Israel agree that members of the millennial generation do not share their parents’ passion for the Jewish state; many are seeking some form of evenhandedness when approaching the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Maybe their parents need to check what they've got passion for too? Save the passion for Jesus. He can handle Israel.

Another weird statement. How on earth do you pass on what is a byproduct of the relationship with Christ? And what is this hard line of Christian Zionists that Gushee speaks of?

And why is there so much animosity against Israel in the church?
