I found this article an interesting contrast between two ministers who withdrew from the Church of England. One, Joseph Charles Philpot, became a Baptist. The other, John Henry Newman, became a Roman Catholic.

I have divided views on J. C. Philpot. He was indeed greatly used of the Lord. Many of his writings are valuable and true. But...he leans into hyperCalvinism --that's a cautionary note.

Here is what A.W. Pink said of him :
"Personally, we have often lamented the fact that Mr. Gadsby, and later, Mr. Philpot , followed (what we believe was) the error of Wm. Huntington, instead of adhering to that path which had been almost uniformly trodden by the Reformers and Puritans."

I have one of his books :Sin and Salvation. It's quite good at just 165 pages.

The Gospel Standard Churches are a blend of godliness and error. Who is free of the latter anyway?

    B. A. Ramsbottom's writings have been such a blessing to me over the years. He is gem. He has been laboring at the Word for more than half a century. Banner of Truth has published many of his articles.

Although discernment is needed, I appreciate the sermons of J.K. Popham. I have a book by J.H. Gosden which is bio of J.K. Popham (1847-1937). He was another Gospeal Standard preacher.

But getting back to the contrast between the two men --certainly Philpot was God's man.
