Kasparov joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) in 1984, and in 1987 was elected to the Central Committee of Komsomol. But in 1990 he left the party, and in May took part in the creation of the Democratic Party of Russia.

What we witness on TV everyday doesn't stray very far from this book. The official mainstream narrative is always "he started it" but the reality is always closer to "we started it".
