Late on the Late Gary North

I have not spoken much of this since the Lord called him home, but I was homeschooled using materials organized, and often written, by Gary North. My father, a supporter of Rushdoony’s vision for Christian education and an admirer of Ron Paul’s principles, guided my education in this direction. I inevitably encountered North at the Misee Institute as a teen (if you know who Gary is, you probably know what the Mises Institute is).

Though I had the privilege of meeting him, I am not in any way close to his family or church. I also no longer identify as a Chilton-style theonomist, though I still agree with them on various eschatological and prophetic matters.

Gary North’s personality was memorable. He was sharp, engaging, and blunt—qualities more characteristic of the continental Reformed tradition than the Presbyterian. His polemics, like Luther’s, were bold and uncompromising, leaving no doubt about his convictions. While I often agreed with his critiques, I did not always agree with his proposed solutions. I did appreciate his candor and his effort to address issues clearly and precisely.

It saddened me to know that his voice is now silenced, yet I trust in God as he did. Gary was just a little bit older than me father and died less than a year before my father. May the Lord grant his family comfort and peace.

I’m curious if you have read the biographies of Dr. Lloyd Jones of London?
I possess no independent knowledge of Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones beyond the cursory awareness of his Reformed credentials. My understanding of this Welshman is almost entirely derived from the mentions of him by Gary North. In Backward, Christian Soldiers?, North claims Lloyd-Jones's had neglected the reiteration of the Cultural Mandate in Genesis 9, which profoundly impacts Lloyd-Jones's understanding of man's dominion over the earth.

North's The Dominion Mandate and the Christian Reconstruction Movement mentions Lloyd-Jones's perspective on the Dominion Covenant and its obligations. Lloyd-Jones seems to have recognized the concept, but his application seems to have fallen short of the Christian Reconstruction vision of North.
My own covenant view aligns more closely with North, though I must confess to a less fervent embrace of classical theonomy than some of our brethren in Tyler, Texas.

You are going quite a bit deeper into theology than I’m use to: I think I saw you mentioned you studied theology. Sorry, I won’t be able to keep up with you.

I mentioned Lloyd Jones because his biographies are worth reading, from an inspirational standpoint, and he was Presbyterian where you seem to have found a home church.

Peace to you
