Leaders in House Block Earmarks to Corporations

It is well past time this was done. Conservatives should be cheering over this one! I hope this is just the beginning of banning such abuses by Congressmen/women of both parties. The Senate should also ban such earmarks.

WASHINGTON — House Democratic leaders on Wednesday banned budget earmarks to private industry, ending a practice that has steered billions of dollars in no-bid contracts to companies and set off corruption scandals.

The ban is the most forceful step yet in a three-year effort in Congress to curb abuses in the use of earmarks, which allow individual lawmakers to award financing for pet projects to groups and businesses, many of them campaign donors.

Stop earmarks to everyone and then I will be impressed. Beating up on the "big bad companies" is just a liberal inconsistancy

" The new restrictions, for example, would still allow the type of award to local governmental agencies that became infamous in 2005 with Alaska’s “Bridge to Nowhere.”

They still want to earmark money for pointless public projects so they can brag about bringing home the money from Washington and get re-elected.

Agreed. Send earmarks on a permanent vacation.

Of course, that will never happen. How else will congressmen buy votes?

A 1/8th step in the right direction until they cut their pay by 20%, cut their bloated staffs, and cut out ALL junkets to paradise in the name of "research" or whatever they call it, AS WELL AS block all earmarks.

I agree more needs to be done. Wonder why it was the evil liberal Eemocrats who started this and not the conservativer Republicans when they had control of Congress.

I believe all earmarks should be elimniated!

It is not all demcoms who support this and it is about the hatred against big business not about earmarks in and of themselves.

Earmarks should be made illegal with jail time for those who propose them. Also, the voting public should be aware of and opposing them as well.

It will never happen though...

This is good news. Finally, the Democrats are making progress towards balancing the budget. All we need to do now if for the budget commission to do its job, and we'll be well on our way.

Why did the Republicans do nothing about this when they were in power?

About what? Singling out big business. Because Republicans are not in the habit of doing such ridiculous things. Again this is not about earmarks. It is about taking from big business and giving it to other liberal pet projects. There will not be one earmark less spent in the future. Only redistributed elsewhere.

Yeah, get back to me when they privatize Fannie and Freddie.

Don't you think it's just a little ironic to cheer a Congress for allegedly banning earmarks to corporations, while most of them voted in favor of TARP, taking over the auto and banking industries, and are currently trying to hijack the healthcare industry?

 So you like and defend no bid contracts so the government can pay $1000 a hammer. Wow, and you call yourself a conservative.

I mean really...you should be embarrassed.

Yes you really should be embarrassed. You claim to be conservative, but take positions that would embarrass a true conservative. Plus you waste your time online when you should be working with your new church and its congregation. Plus you have posted some very liberal interpretations of various Biblical passages ... and you did say that "Eve's words are not important." I do wish that post was still available to cut and paste here, but it is too old.

You remind me of an honest pastor who said, "I can do anything with my time I want. Being a pastor is like being retired. No one knows what I do with my time."

And, you never answered my questions.

The House Republicans want to end ALL earmarks.

Do you think that the Democrats will go along with that?

Well we can bet the Republicans will not go for it. After all they did nothing about earmarks while they were in power. It was only after they saw the Democrats were serious about eliminating any earmarks that the Republicans spoke at all. They, as usual, were simply being the party of "NO." Anything proposed by the Democrats is a "NO' to them simply because it was proposed by the Democrats. It does not matter how good an idea is, if it was not proposed by the Republicans they attitude is "NO WAY." They did nothing while they were in power in this area and are simply being obstructionists now.

Will the Democrats "go all the way?" Don't hold your breath. Ask me again in 3 years.
