“For years, Oregon has mandated that all filling stations be full-service—meaning that a station employee must work the nozzle. People who are in a hurry and out-of-state visitors accustomed to self-service are reminded firmly but politely (this is Oregon, after all) to keep their hands away from the pump.

Oregon and New Jersey are the only states to have this restriction. Mercifully, it's starting to fall apart.”

Glad to see the free market expanding and government coercion retreating for Oregonians.

I'd guess the basis for the original law would be of interest. Having lived in OR a long long time, it was very nice to have someone else do the work. Upon moving from OR I must admit getting used to doing it myself was not the most pleasant thing but I did survive - can understand why Oregonians are not overly excited.

Having seen all the idiot self-servers burning their cars and the gas station and or driving away with the hose in the spout on youtube, it might be a good idea to have someone doing the pumping. :)

Why can't it be a business decision by the individual service station's owner and not a government mandate?

    Allowing is not mandating.

I have never seen these issues at any local station in all of the towns I have lived in nor ever seen them when traveling during my entire life. I don’t doubt that someone might forget to take out the hose but it would be quite rare compared to the number of fill-ups.

Thanks for that information I did not know that... It comes in handy at just the right time as we are going to our granddaughters College Graduation in Eugene, she's a Duck, next week and I've haven't been to Oregon in over 50 years... I usually pump my own gas but I guess when we get there we will go with the flow... I will deem it an honor to have someone pump gas for we while I sit... Reminds of that old Texaco TV ad... You can trust you car to the man that wears the star... The big, bright, Texaco Star... Ding, ding... Fill it up please!... Btw if you know this jingle and saw it live, you're as old as I am... I can remember back when full serve was the norm in my neck of the woods - some stations added some self serve for those that wanted it and ultimately started charging more for full service.

Back in that day you'd drive in, turn off the car, get out, tell the owner what you wanted, walk over and pull a bottle of pop (Grapette in my case) out of the machine, sit down and wait for the owner to check the oil, tires, radiator, then finish the gas and come sit down beside you for a bit of a talk.

Owner's choice??????? what planet do you live on? :)

Then there is the person trying to put the gas nozzle into the electric input of an electric car and getting frustrated that it won't fit.

When I talk to people in Oregon, it tends to be a very popular law.

I haven’t seen a problem with it. You see far fewer fly-by-night gas stations and the ones which are left are well established.

It would be interesting to see if this law passes.

I did not anticipate that the idea of allowing people to pump their own gas would be so controversial. It was only a few years ago that I learned that it was banned in any state.
