And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Presently reading a book which is considered a classic among Christian literature and was surprised to find that the author interprets the one able to destroy body and soul in hell to be Satan.
I always thought that in this verse Jesus is referring to God the Father.
Has anyone else ever heard of this exegesis of this verse?

BTW the book I am reading is "The Training of the Twelve" by A.B Bruce

Where did God give Satan that authority in the Lake of Fire? I can't remember reading that view anywhere concerning eternal punishment.

Now, some physically are given to Satan to destroy their bodies. Job gives stories about Satan's limited authority in that regard.

But in hell? Smacks of some far side cartoons with the pitchfork et al

Either God is in charge . . or He is not God. Hmmm

A.B. Bruce was a Scottish Presbyterian and he was taking his theology from the continent at the time. There were a number of German theologians who espoused that interpretation.

Scroggie, on that side of pond, and Broadus, on this side, dispelled that idea about the same time that Bruce was going on about his view.
    Prior to 1886.

    Cheers,

    Jim
