How does the planet Mercury differ fromour moon, which is not called a planet ? Judging by these photos, Mercury and the moon look pretty much the same to me ...

Well, I don't know the exact construction of either, but the Moon and Mercury probably are very much the same.

The only difference is a definition. A "moon" is a satellite, an object that orbits a planet, such as the moons of Jupiter or Saturn. These objects are very planet like, they may even be larger than a planet, but they are a moon simply because they are orbiting a planet.

Mercury is a planet, not a moon, because it is not orbiting a planet.

So, the only real difference is definition.

he who orbits is the moon. Seems to make sense at first read but then it came to mind, the earth is orbiting the Sun. All those jokes throughout the years about sending someone you don't like to the moon - as Ralph Kramden on the Honeymooners used to do, "to the moon Alice!!!" and we're already there
