The Minnesota congresswoman and former Republican presidential candidate was recently granted dual citizenship, Bachmann's office confirmed Tuesday night, according to CNN.
"Congresswoman Bachmann's husband is of Swiss descent so she has been eligible for dual-citizenship since they got married in 1978," spokeswoman Becky Rogness said in a statement. "However, recently some of their children wanted to exercise their eligibility for dual-citizenship so they went through the process as a family."

I see no problem with this from a citizens standpoint, but I would think that any future ambitions for the presidency is over because of it.

When a person is sworn in as a new US citizen he renounces all other national loyalties. Why should this not be a two way street?

He did, Kenya and Indonesia. Look it up. That's why there is a swirl about his "natural born citizen" status.

Not true, look it up. I just did. There are people in the US with dual citizenships. However, some nations will not allow you to have DC, so if you become a US citizen, you may lose your citizenship in that other country automatically. :flower:

Kenya considered him a citizen because his father was Kenyan. Obama had no say in the matter as he was a new born. However he automatically lost the Kenyan citizenship when he turned 23.

It is like the daughter of one of my workmates. His wife was French. She became a US citizen. Regardless when their daughter was born France consider the daughter a French citizen. If they had a son the French would consider him French and subject to being drafted into the French military ... if he were silly enough to visit France at the age of enlistment.

On the Indonesian citizenship, his mother married a citizen of Indonesia. Indonesia at that point considered her an Indonesian citizen. She never renounced her US citizenship and thus never lost it. If this had been prior to 1922 she would have lost her citizenship as it was illegal for an American to hold dual citizenship prior to that date.

Under Indonesian law Obama might have been considered an Indonesian citizen because his step-father was Indonesian. However, that would not have any effect on his US citizenship.

The lady under discussion in this thread can legally hold dual citizenship. And since she was a natural born citizen she can run and if elected be the president.

Dual citizenship for a private citizen is one thing. Dual citizenship for the one holding the office of the Presidency is another. Divided loyalties and all that.

So no one holding dual citizenship should be allowed to be in an elected public office?

Not every office is one of the three branches of government, one duty of which is acting as Commander-in-Chief.

So let me ask you, what's your opinion of a President holding citizenship in another nation and why?
