More US Airlines Impose Vaccine Mandates: American, Alaska, JetBlue

More U.S. air carriers—American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and JetBlue—have announced they will be requiring employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

The move comes as the Biden administration has ramped up pressure on airlines to require vaccines as part of a broader strategy to boost inoculation rates in the country. President Joe Biden signed an executive order last month requiring federal contractors to mandate shots for employees, with the White House later setting a Dec. 8 deadline for getting the vaccine.

The airlines say they provide special flights and other services for the government and so fall under Biden’s mandate.

“While we are still working through the details of the federal requirements, it is clear that team members who choose to remain unvaccinated will not be able to work at American Airlines,” Doug Parker, American Airlines chief executive, told employees in an Oct. 1 memo.

Alaska Airlines said in a memo to employees Friday it would require staff to get the shot, with no testing option but the possibility to apply for an exemption on religious or medical grounds.

“This means employees may no longer opt-in for regular testing and masking in lieu of getting the vaccine,” Alaska Airlines said in a memo to employees, according to The Associated Press.

Andy Schneider, Alaska Airlines’ senior vice president of people, was cited by The Seattle Times as saying Biden’s vaccine mandate applies to the company’s subsidiaries and some contractors.

“After careful review of this order, we have determined that Alaska, Horizon, and McGee employees (including certain contractors and vendors) do fall under this federal vaccine mandate due to our significant work for the federal government, alongside the other major U.S. airlines. This policy will replace our company policy of vaccination or testing that we announced earlier this month,” Schneider told employees in an email, according to the outlet.

JetBlue’s CEO Robin Hayes and COO Joanna Geraghty told employees in an email on Friday getting the vaccine would now be a condition of employment.

“Based on the guidance issued, all JetBlue Crewmembers—regardless of working in the operation, a support center, or at home—will be required by the government to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 to continue performing their role,” they wrote, according to CNBC.

Airlines’ approaches to Biden’s mandate have varied, with Delta saying on Friday it was continuing to evaluate the administration’s plan, while Southwest said it “continues to strongly encourage employees to receive the COVID-19 vaccine,” according to Reuters.

Meanwhile, a union representing pilots for several major U.S. airlines warned that COVID-19 vaccine mandates could lead to travel disruptions during the upcoming holiday travel season if pilots are forced to choose between getting the shot or leaving their job. The union called for alternatives to getting the COVID-19 vaccine such as regular testing or proof of natural immunity.

They continue on even in the light of possible adverse effects.

With vaccines that were developed to counter the original version of the virus, and that the variants are essentially bypassing and making people sick in spite of vaccination status?

I wish them well, and I'm sure that in their minds, they are doing whatever it takes to stop the spread of something that historically cannot and will not be stopped... until the Lord decides that it's over:

" The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up." ( 1 Samuel 2:6 ).

" See now that I am He; there is no God besides Me. I bring death and I give life; I wound and I heal, and there is no one who can deliver from My hand." ( Deuteronomy 32:39 ).

" For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole." ( Job 5:18 ).

From what I've seen so far and after more than 18 months, nothing that men have done so far has made much of a a dent in people getting sick.

For example, the first vaccines were rolled out this past January, and by March almost everyone at my workplace had received them.
Yet, most of the new cases being reported there ( starting this past summer ) are from people who are already vaccinated.
Some were mild cases and a few of them more serious...one man in his mid 60's even died in August, and he had been vaccinated along with the rest.

Sweden didn't impose lock downs, for the most part, and has statistics comparable to ( or even better than ) my home state of Illinois, that did...
Sweden COVID: 1,153,655 Cases and 14,827 Deaths - Worldometer
Illinois COVID: 1,630,864 Cases and 27,714 Deaths - Worldometer

So, if we as a race can't even stop the spread of influenza, the common cold and many other diseases...
Do we really think that we can stop SARS-COV2?

Apparently so.

The rewards outweigh the risks, SGO.
At least, that's the way I'm reading things.:(

Ah well...
I have 7 years to wait until I can realistically retire, and I work for a federal contractor in DOD manufacturing...
I guess it's time for me to take the shot ( because it's that or I get fired for refusing ) and see if I get heart inflammation or blood clots, whether I like it or not.

If it happens and I die, I'll get my wish and I'll be out of here... and with the Lord who loves me. :)
If I don't die, then God will take care of me until I do.

Either way, it looks like I'll have to exercise that faith that the Lord gave me ( Ephesians 2:8, Hebrews 12:2 ), one way or the other.;)

I'm frustrated as well, watching what was historically a rule in the United States fast becoming "out-dated"...
The freedom to decide one's own health and welfare and to take advantage of the guarantee of "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness"...or so the slogan went.

I'm also confused, and wondering how far things will go in the nation that I have to spend the rest of my earthly life in,
and that once boasted in its personal freedoms and its Constitution.
I suppose that desperate times make for desperate people...and desperation can lead to almost anything.

Nevertheless, as Christians, let us look to the Lord, my friend.
He is our Deliverer.:)

May God bless you.

They have expressed their agreement with the federal mandate according to the executive order signed by Mr. Biden,
and are waiting for official notice before they start requiring the vaccines.

For now, it is still voluntary.

A lot has to do with experience (personal experience). I am retired Army, so I am familiar with mandatory vaccinations. The military has over 15 mandated vaccinations. I joined in 91. They lined us up and started giving shots. I am amazed we didn't have some type of reaction...I mean, it was not just 1 shot a day....we got them all at once (and didn't get to wait 15 minutes to see how we faired).

So I understand mandated vaccinations for certain occupations. I have no issue with the executive branch mandating FDA approved vaccinations for agencies under its authority.

BUT I believe the federal government dictating to private companies is an overreach of executive power.

I did it, too Jon.
I joined in '86 and left in '97, was IRR until 2000.

As do I.

Neither do I, especially the military.

I graduated high school in 86.

The determine factor, IMHO, to the federal government mandating vaccines for agencies under its authority is the mission of the agency and the consequences of not implementing such a policy.

I understand the military implementing a mandate. I work for a federal contractor (a private company). But we are strictly DOE at one nuclear site. We are required to be vaccinated (fully vaccinated) by 1 Dec as a condition of employment. I understand the necessity here (we cannot afford to have a lot of people come down with covid....and we had 6 die of vovid in the past 3 months).

But President Biden telling Walmart they have to vaccinated or test employees weekly, regardless of the merit of the order, is beyond the authority (IMHO) of the federal government.

Full disclosure- I am a "states rights" guy....perhaps to the extreme. I do not believe the federal government should tax individuals as we have no true representation at the federal level. They should tax states (and states tax individuals).

Jon,
Understanding the necessity of not being able to afford people coming down sick, is to me, irrelevant ( but I also agree with you )...
It's happening no matter what people are trying to do to keep from getting sick.
As an example, occasional cases of CoVID-19 are being reported at my company of over 1,000 employees ( and have been all summer ), regardless of vaccinations received or not received.

We've had 1 death of a vaccinated person ( no deaths among the unvaccinated, so far ), with several serious cases and many mild cases on both sides of the tracks.
Most now are among the fully vaccinated, as only around 10-15% of the people at my company have chosen to forego the vaccines.
There are 5 people in my department who have not been vaccinated, myself included.
The rest of the 20+ have been, and two of them have already come down sick and returned to work.

The facts and stats don't matter, Jon.
The powers-that-be have made their decision ( it seems ), and all of us are going to have to live with it.

That said, it's time for me to bow out before I get caught up in speaking evil of men.
I wish you and the readers well, and may God bless you all.

I agree that we can't keep everybody from getting sick. That said, the covid is much more dangerous than influenza (and the military mandates flu shots in certain areas).

The vaccine has proven effective in preventing cases of covid, in preventing cases from becoming serious, and in providing quicker recovery rates. At the same time there are risks. It can cause, rarely, mycoplasma (and has in 3 servicemembers). It can cause, rarely, severe allergic reactions (thus far none in servicemembers). So the risks and benefits need to be weighed.
