    Well this is a prime example of why we need an informed clergy to aid our "newbie" Christians in procuring a Bible which will be helpful for them. We just can't expect new Christians to be able to choose a translation since they are largely uninformed already.

    Well, Jim. I am one of those people to whom the OP applies. I was raised in a completely non-religious home. I was aware of the KJV (who isn't in the English-speaking world) but I knew next to nothing about it. However, at age 19 when I first started attending church (in a denom. that uses the NIV) I had absolutely no problem understanding that the Bible was originally written in ancient languages and that different people had different ways of interpreting and translating those languages.

    People aren't stupid, you know. Anybody with a 6th + grade education (or less) would have no problem understanding the concept of "translation". When my (then) five year old asked me why I had so many Bibles I explained it to her and she found it made perfect sense. So is your hypothetical customer on a lesser intellectual level than my daughter? If so, how are they going to read any Bible? If not, your argument is invalid.

    I totally got your point upon first reading. I answered the OP accordingly. You apparantly didn't like my response. Just because you didn't like my response doesn't mean I didn't get your point.

    Your point notwithstanding, the OP has a KJVO between-the-lines agenda. Others see that as well, as it is not very transparent. I don't have a problem with that agenda being discussed.

    I'm with Phillip and SteveC on this.People are'nt as dumb as we think.
    I do think from a common sense point of view though we should point out to a new Christian that there a several popular scholarly valid translations which are the Word of God,tell them our personal preference and why,then tell them about several other versions.It might also be good to point out that while they might want to start out with one translation that they can get on the internet (public libraries have computers) and examine other versions before spending money on translations they would'nt want to buy. There are many ways to approach this.
    This also points out the reason to have classes for new believer's in Discipleship.One of the classes could be an objective look at several translations of the Bible. Sorry guys I can't recommend paraphrases.
    Just my 2 cents.

    KJV1611 front cover: "THE HOLY BIBLE, 1611 Edition, King James
    Version".

    KJV1769 front cover: "Tim LaHaye PROPHECY STYUDY BIBLE,
    King James Version."

    KJV1873 front cover: "TODAY'S PARALLE BIBLE, NIV, updated NASB,
    KJV, NLT."

    Yep, the only one that is honest up front
    about which KJV it is, the KJV1611 is
    the one that says "Holy Bible".

    Obviously, that is your answer, 1611 is it. Now that we have the perfect Bible from 1611 forward, now all we have to do is find out what was perfect BEFORE 1611. :rolleyes:
