MINNEAPOLIS — Under a settlement to a federal lawsuit, up to 100 Somali Muslims who are current or former workers at Gold'n Plump Inc. will receive a total of $365,000.
The settlement was filed in Minneapolis on Friday. It sprang from allegations of religious discrimination at the company's chicken processing plants in Cold Spring and Arcadia, Wis.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed lawsuits against St. Cloud-based Gold'n Plump and the Work Connection Inc., an employment agency in St. Paul, which handled some hiring for the plant.

Under the settlement, Gold'n Plump agreed to pay $215,000 to workers who were terminated for taking prayer breaks.

The Work Connection will pay $150,000 to workers who were asked to sign a form acknowledging that they might be required to handle pork, which many Muslims consider unclean....

Guess no good deed (informed consent) goes unpunished!:tonofbricks:

So does that mean, that if I work in a C-store, I no longer am required to sell boose and cancer sticks!

What a crock!! Is this the United States of America or the Islamic States of America. Keep this up and the latter will be true.

Accomodation Notwithstanding

On The bright Side...

Now Christians can cite precedence for taking Prayer Breaks, too.

(Yeah, and I've got some swamp land for sale, too!) :)

As I read the article the Pork didn't appear to be the issue, the issue was that the employer hired Muslims knowing they had certain restrictions then fired them for adhering to them. (Prayer Regimen)

Granted any reasonable interpretation of hiring practice does not allow you to ask about religious affiliation, or hire or fire on that basis.

I agree the Judge was wrong. These people knew they were hiring into a Production/Assembly Line Environment... If anyone takes a break at the wrong time there goes the whole thing!

A Wendy's I frequented in Columbia SC, some time ago, had a Muslim girl working there. The accomodation they worked out was a long sleeved shirt worn under the short sleeved uniform shirt. I am not sure how they handled the skirt vs slacks. But, I believe Her Imam signed off on the slacks because of the inherent safety risk.

The law says "Reasonable" Accomodation... Not shut down your operation.

Devout Muslims have to pray (I believe) five times a day... They could do so, if they wanted to, by moving their prayer times around to: before work, first break, lunch, second break, after work...

Judge wrong, these Muslims were wrong for even asking...

Wow, perhaps the Hispanics have hope for a siesta.

I would hope one has the right to consider their religion when accepting a job meaning if you don't want to handle pork don't take this job. This is like a vegetarian getting a job at Burger King then saying they wont handle beef.

Unfortunately, the "right to be offended" has been added (with monetary penalties) to the Bill of Rights.

Sad.

Shouldn't that be, The right (for all except Christians) *NOT* to be offended?
