A relative's pastor preaches from the niv. Lot's of people there use the nlt.

Pastor says this is not a good idea. What think ye regarding accuracy and readablilty between these two popular versions?

Nodak, TNIV is a great update of the NIV, but has come under a lot of attack.

NLT has been flying under the radar the gender-issue and been doing great because of attacks on the TNIV.

    I recommend both.

His pastor might faint if he spotted a tniv. I wonder if the complaint about the nlt is the gender stuff?

So anyway--old original niv or nlt?

NLTse over the NLT1996. The NIV is not my favorite, would rather read the HCSB. Never read the TNIV (considering reading through that next year), but it has it's proponents and opponents. Since I haven't read it, I have not decided one way or the other.

Why did the pastor say it's not a good idea? Is it the gender issue, or something else?

Nodak, let's assume that you're referring to the NLT ('04 and '07), then I'll give it the nod over the NIV.

When a person take the time to look into the NLTse and is able to get beyond shibboleths, the NLTse proves to be quite accurate.

Webdog, I'll love to hear you take on the TNIV, since you're open to reading it.

Wait....there was a revision in '07? What's the difference between the '04 revision?

Not really that significant. I have an advanced copy of the NLT Study Bible which has the changes.

One of them is Gal 3:27. The NLT Blog is going to put up the changes sometime soon.

    My thoughts on TNIV

I was excited about it but then I kind of stumbled over not finding the Lamb in the mist of the Throne in Revelation...

It says in one place this,
17 For the Lamb at the center before the throne
    will be their shepherd;

I don't care for any translation that makes less of Who Jesus is.

You are setting yourself up for a lot of disappointment, my library of versions is replete with them.

    Yes

    Indeed.

    Grin.

I probably have exceeded the Bible quest and purchases more than the average obsessed individual who loves Bibles.
