No ‘G’day, mate’: On call with Australian prime minister, Trump badgers and brags

It should have been one of the most congenial calls for the new commander in chief — a conversation with the leader of Australia, one of America’s staunchest allies, at the end of a triumphant week.

Instead, President Trump blasted Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull over a refugee agreement and boasted about the magnitude of his electoral college win, according to senior U.S. officials briefed on the Saturday exchange. Then, 25 minutes into what was expected to be an hour-long call, Trump abruptly ended it.

At one point Trump informed Turnbull that he had spoken with four other world leaders that day — including Russian President Vladimir Putin — and that “This was the worst call by far.”

Would you expect Trump to abide by this:

"At the heart of the weekend conversation between Trump and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was a deal struck with the Obama administration that would allow mostly Muslim refugees rejected by Australia to be resettled in the United States."

No thanks, don't think so...

If it was an agreement between the U.S. and Australia, it should be honored.

So your answer is, yes? Seems to me we are being taken advantage of and this doesn't align with the new policies of putting the U.S. first. New kid on the block (edit, like EWF's better, "new Sheriff in town") making new agreements...too bad, so sad...

Yes, I expect Trump to honor a clause in his own executive order.

From the article:
Many of the refugees came from Iran, Iraq, Sudan and Somalia, countries now listed in Trump’s order temporarily barring their citizens entry to the United States.

A special provision in the Trump order allows for exceptions to honor “a preexisting international agreement,” a line that was inserted to cover the Australia deal.

----

So it's not that Trump wants to jettison Obama's deal with Australia, he wants to go back on a clause in his own executive order.

Do you believe it? The Obama Administration agreed to take thousands of illegal immigrants from Australia. Why? I will study this dumb deal!

He seems to have a bit of trouble with the details. Went from 1,250 refugees to "thousands of illegal immigrants".

And now the immigrants are from Australia. And he forgot about the clause inserted in his EO agreeing to take these people.

First, I seriously doubt any written in stone commitment to accept these refugees. In fact, a clause allowing for an exception, does not mean the same thing as agree to it.

Second, I expect to Trump to honor his commitment to put America first. Fraid you need to get your priorities straight about who's side you're on and what you want to defend, the Progressives' Paths or the New Paths we're on...

I remember when Republican rightly called out Obama for insulting our allies.

He certainly insulted his share of them, especially the British and Israel. He never stopped insulting Israel. We never heard about most of them.

That's not true.
What's not true? The report that there was a clause in Trump's immigration order allowing for the refugees refused asylum In Australia to come to the US?

A plain reading of the article says that Trump agreed to take these people. Is the Washington Post lying?

Strawman much... You probably don't even realize you're doing it.

That he forgot about it. He just didn't like it.

I'm trying to think of how it is even possible to get into a shouting fit with an Aussie.

Who said he was shouting? I don't remember reading that.

here is a link to an Australian newspaper take. http://www.smh.com.au/federal-polit...-shorten-demands-answers-20170202-gu3x7e.html

"The call ended courteously. It was a 25-minute call, it covered a number of issues but mainly on the refugee resettlement deal," Mr Turnbull said, adding the pair had had a "frank and forthright" conversation in a call that was supposed to have lasted for one hour.

They do seem upset about Trump's tweet about the deal with them as well as the fact that someone told the press that it was a contentious call.

This article goes into who they think may have leaked to the press and why: http://www.smh.com.au/federal-polit...olm-turnbulls-phone-call-20170202-gu3zo9.html

I thought that seeing what the Australian press was saying might give another dimension to this story.

Sorry. Here is how the article describes the conversation:

"Trump fumed"
"Trump blasted"
"Trump's bombastic style"
"Trump's version of vitriol"
"The conversation was hostile and charged"
"Trump vented anger"
"The friction with Turnbull reflected Trump’s anger"

So, yes, you are technically correct--the word shout was not used.

If you intend to continue to follow me around this board with the intention to correct me, best to do your homework first or you are in for humiliation.

Don't flatter yourself, Jr.

Just stop making things up. That's twice, just in this thread. Trump will give you enough ammunition to spew your hate without making it up.
