So a "real" Marine is one who says what he believes, but is subsequently relieved of duty because he notifies his leadership that he won't be obeying orders?

Article 90 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice states:

1) strikes his superior commissioned officer or draws or lifts up any weapon or offers any violence against him while he is in the execution of his office; or

(2) willfully disobeys a lawful command of his superior commissioned officer; shall be punished, if the offense is committed in time of war, by death or such other punishment as a court-martial may direct, and if the offense is committed at any other time, by such punishment, other than death, as a court-martial may direct.”

If a person refuses an order, believing it is unlawful, he/she will face a court-martial and his/her innocence or guilt will be decided by a military court.

True men know that there comes a time when you have to go against orders that are unjust as well as speak against those who give them. This man has taken that challenge. Cowards question and stand against such ideals and remain silent while they claim codes above righteousness.

If the uniform is used to represent a particular belief or set of beliefs, then the uniform is associated with protecting, defending, and fighting for only those beliefs. To put on the uniform, we take an oath to defend the Constitution; not any particular set of beliefs, but the freedom to have whatever beliefs you ascribe to (even if those beliefs will keep you on the wide road to Hell).

That man has the right to believe however he wants to believe; and he has the right, and duty, to espouse those beliefs. But not in uniform, and not behind something that sounds like the military (i.e., "Armed Services Tea Party"). To do so is to identify the military with a particular movement/belief system, rather than being impartial and defending everyone's constitutional rights, not just the few they happen to agree with.

We subordinate our own fleshly desires and motives when we become Christians. The same principle applies when we take the oath to defend the Constitution and the United States of America.

The uniform is a representation of the government which employs it. If you don't like what the uniform stands for, look at the senators, representatives, and President that the uniform represents.

A Marine, as any Solider, Airman, or Sailor - takes this oath:

I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that
I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.

and the UCMJ has specific directives in regards to political speech. A service member is NOT at liberty to decide which regulations he will obey.

According to the article, Sgt Stein "had applied to extend his service, which was set to expire in a few months." I am sure this was not an overnight decision - he should have taken his discharge, then went political.

As a Non-Commissioned Officer - it is his responsibility to be aware of the regulations.

Missouri Representative Paul Curtman and Rhode Island Representative Dan Gordon are real Marines. They wore the uniform, and now they're still serving their country.

I especially liked Gordon's statement:

“When I took the oath of office, I swore, as I did when I served in the Marine Corps, that I would support the Constitutions, in this case of Rhode Island and the United States.
